The engine in the '02 and older Hatchbacks (and '03 and older Convertibles) is a Saab engine. The '03+ Sedans ('04+ Convertibles) is the GM Ecotec engine with some extensive modifications. Both good engines. The newer cars have more sound deadening, a more stiff chasis out of the box, etc.
They are two completely different cars. Some people like the Older 9-3s (AKA OG) and some like the Newer 9-3s (AKA NG). I personally like both.

Difference between 2000 - 2002 and 2003 - onward?
I recently test drove a few Saab 9-3's 2000 and 2001 model, then test drove a 2003 9-3. The 2003 drove very differently than the 2000-2001 model and the engines sounded much worse. Does anyone know why this is? Is the 2003 or newer, MUCH better than the 2000-2001 years? The 2000-2001's sounded like they were just working really hard and the engine did not sound very good.
