|ng900||I'm not talking about removing my cat, I'm talking about running a 2.5" pipe from there to the muffler (I'd be getting a sport muffler too). There's a place near me that does a great job for pretty cheap, but all told it'll still be a little over $200. Is it worth the money? I'm in college, so 200 is a lot of money.|

|YJSAABMAN||The backpressure will actually result in less torque, but more HP. I've also heard in the Jeep world, not sure if it applies in the SAAB world, too, that removing the cat can cause premature valve seat and valve seal wear. Like I said, it applies to Jeep 2.5 and 4.0L engines, but not sure about the SAAB 2.3L. I agree, just go with a highflow unit, if you really want to get more flow. If you were doing just 'cause its a cheap mod, don't bother.|

|ricot83||2.5" exhaust is awfuly large for an NA 2.25" is good enough.. hell some turbo cars dont go bugger than 2.5" also a straight pipe on an NA will result in less power due to less bacfkpressure|

Guys, you can't replace the cat with a straight pipe on an N/A. You will lose backpressure which will result in MINUS HP! Try a sport cat.
The max you should go for an exhaust is 2.5". Which is my plan for this summer with a custom exhaust manifold.

|ng900||I've been thinking about doing a 2.5" straight cat-back exhaust at the end of August, and I've got some of the same questions as Unkept. With an automatic trans ng900 2.3 N/A, will I gain any hp, and if so will it be worth the cost? And will I lost some torque like some have said?|

|Les Bouquins||I might pull it out just to see how it feels... drive it around a bit and then if I am not satisfied with the results (drop in fuel efficiency or low end torque, as mentioned) i'll pop it back in. We have a hydraulic lift at my house with a full shop, so this isn't anything hard to do.|

|Les Bouquins||From what I've read, it's possible that I might be sacrificing some of my low end torque for incremental increases like 4-10 top end HP... I think i might try it just for shits and giggles and if I don't like it, just throw it back in...|

Straight pipe installation in place of cat...
Just wondering, would my figures increase any? I know they'd be slight, but I've read you can get some better fuel economy and performance from straight piping the part of the exhaust that includes the catalytic converter... could this fuck with my emissions though? I know I got rid of the cat on my old Mazda 626 (87... first car) and on the highway I did like 40 mpg. I just wanted some opinions here. I think I might just do it and see what happens. I guess I could always just plug it back in if I didn't like it... we don't have inspections in MI...
