Other than that, not too many people bought Saabs... esp. compared to Civics and BMWs. So folks making parts for Saabs can't expect to sell as much as making parts for more popular cars. Moreover.... even fewer of us take the effort to modify our cars. |

saab4life | how come saab shit must be so damn expensive!!

A lot of work was done to the car, so it was a package price. An e-mail to ChipCenter will reveal the price of the manifold ![]() |

Maarten i have heard that chipcenter does not have as good a rep for quality parts as many other companies do (speedparts,nortic,maptun etc...) how much did the ChipCenter ones cost? |

The manifold looks great ![]() I have always wanted a manifold like that.............until a friend had Chip Center install one on his 9-3. It's a disappointment because it's prone to cracking. After a few months, it had to be welded again two times ![]() When I asked a custom exhaust shop about a tubular exhaust manifold they also warned for this phenomenon. ![]() Perhaps the Taliaferro manifold is better quality, they seem to have good stuff. |

Realize that increasing the volume of piping between the turbo and throttle body will add turbo lag. This is the reason why WRXs use a TMIC rather than a FMIC. The major restriction in the FMIC to throttle body path in the B204L is the throttle body transition casting. If you have already performed the port and polish on this piece you know that the inside diameter narrows at the bend. However to replace this with a mandrel bent piece will require more clearance at the hood. This is one place where Saab really screwed up in the motor design. By orienting the throttle body vertically, the intake manifold requires an additional 90 degree bend to flow air and they were forced to flatten the TBTC for hood clearance. Ideally you would mod the intake manifold to orient the throttle body horizontally and then mandrel bend the IC tubing from there to eliminate the TBTC. Then air will flow more easily into the engine. Modifying the IC tubing w/o dealing with the TBTC restriction is a useless mod. |

slaab....i would never even dream of fabricating a new exhaust manifold.... ![]() i am talking about replacing the plastic IC delivery pipe with a fully metal one with less restrictions.... ![]() |

I definately see your point. I feel the new manifold from Genuine Saab, has been tested and proved beneficial. Although Nick hasn't yet posted dyno numbers, I've seen other tubular manifolds that have offered has much as 15hp increase. I don't think anyone without a shop and race experience would even dream about making their own manifold however ![]() |

What is the benefit you are seeking from upgrading the exhaust manifold? If you enlarge the manifold you reduce backpressure and also reduce the pressure of the exhaust driving the turbo. If you enlarge the opening, you reduce the velocity of the exhaust to drive the turbo. To understand this, feel the difference in pressure between blowing thru a straw vs. with you mouth wide open. If you have equal length runners, exhaust pulses reach the turbo at regular intervals and you end up with a smoother exhaust note. Also cavitation at the compressor is reduced, allowing higher boost levels at high rpm from small turbos. Residual pulses behind the turbo have a scavenging effect. I have seen some applications where the runner length is adjusted so that exhaust pulses from several cylinders hit the turbo at the same time. This increases the exhaust pressure on the turbo. This is mainly for drag racers running huge turbos. Additionally, you want the turbo as close to the cylinder as possible. The farther the turbo is away, the greater the loss of energy as the exhaust pulse travels to the turbo. So, if you are planning to build your own manifold, you need to be able to make tight bends and figure out the path to get the runners all the same length. Props to you if you have the skills. If not, use the stock mainfold or weld an adaptor to the end of it. |

iwantaviggen | yeah i think that will be the most difficult part is welding up that BPV flang....what matterials would you suggest i use for the tubing itself?...
12-06-2003 07:08 AM | ||
Blaque | Yea definately give that a try, I may try it as well for my NG900. The key would be to use a mandrel bender, and find a good 90 degree coupling that would attach to the throttle body. Also you'd need to find someway to connect the larger piping (im thinking 2.5") to the pipe off the intercooler. The welder would come in handy to attach the BOV/BPV flange.

im not to fond of Abbott either...but they comeup with some good stuff... i was thinking of taking it to an exhaust shop im shure they could shape the tubing for me...andi have access to a welder...so im going to give it a try sooner or later...will keep you posted |

I wonder why they couldn't make one for the T5 setup, considering its very much alike. I suppose it wouldn't be that difficult to construct one. ![]() |

New Exhaust Manifold Taliaferro just added a new exhaust manifold to their performance upgrades. Check it out. ![]() Looks nice, and I'm sure its going to have decent power increases (they'll be dynoing it soon). Bad part is it costs $903 ![]() |
