No, my other 99 will make a better winter beater...the '99 9-3
I'll drive the '73 down southern MN and throw it in a nice garage/shed/thing for the winter, then figure out what I want to do with it this spring. 1st thing will probably be to drop the gas tank and get that stabilized. After that, whatever, drive it until the motor, trans, or engine management doesn't work then change it for something more betterer.

With the imminent resurrection of the 99 Turbo, I have too many cars and too little space.
So the car is SOLD -- to a good home, i.e., JK's garage. Dropped off this afternoon.

Well, after yesterday's revelation -- that having no gas in the tank will cause fuel starvation issues -- I decided today to flush and fill the cooling system.
Interesting problem -- the coolant drain on the engine block won't drain. I got as much out as I could and did a couple of half flushes, but obviously I need to get all of it to drain at some point.
I might wait until I can get it up on a lift, because the drain itself is tucked up and under the exhaust pipe.

Greg, drop it and get it tanked. I did this for my Z. It was cheap and worthwhile. The biggest pain is getting rid of all the old gas.
Not sure of who in MPLS does it though.

40 miles is definitely abnormal.
you could try something like this http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Auto-Fue...it_p_7-34.html I used that stuff for a motorcycle tank, and it worked awesome. Might be a bit of a pain on a car tank, since its bigger, but its probably your only option at this point, not like you can buy a new tank.

Well, I had a nice drive Sunday in the green '73 99 - about 25 miles of urban freeway driving.
I pulled off the freeway and the car stalled, like it had been stalling before. It felt exactly like before, fuel starvation. I got it home (and the fuel starvation started getting worse). I pulled the fuel filter I put in before I left on vacation, and it was clogged, and dripping with small pieces of rust-colored debris. Just like the old one I pulled off.
I've put about 40 miles on the car since putting in the fuel filter. At this rate of fuel filter consumption, I'm looking at 4 or 5 fuel filters per tank. Although the fuel filter in the car is very easy to change, 40 miles per fuel filter is (I presume) an unnaturally high rate of consumption.
So I've got a bunch of rusty crap in the tank. What's the recommended protocol, keep changing fuel filters until it's gone? Drop and clean the tank?
Thanks again for the advice and guidance. FWIW the car seems to be running well otherwise. I had it up to 80 on the freeway.

Those wheels look surprisingly good on a 99. I need to get me some. Stock 99 hubcaps are so old-lady.
What year did they change the position of the radio on the 99? In mine the A/C is in the same place as the radio in the two pictured in this thread. I really hate reaching half way to the floor for the radio.

very cool car. The old 99's have a really classic look. Needs a 5 speed, Gabriel Red Ryder shocks and you will be all set Did you check the point-gap yet? That's one of the rather critical ignition components that can potentially stop the car dead in it's tracks.
Also, the D-jet points... probably should get ahold of Doug M. if you need some instruction on those. He is the 99 D-Jet man.
