It sounds like a turbo failure to me, the colors of smoke are one indicator, but at 91k on an LPT orig turbo it is def on the fritz:
Unbolt the banded clamp on the intake pipe at the Turbo's compressor inlet.
This will give you access to the turbine wheel. Reaching into your turbo feel the axle in the center of the turbine and try to wiggle it around. If there is much play at all your GT17 has joined the legions of failed LPTs before it.
I would strongly reccomend checking this sooner than later. I knew the turbo was on the way out but put it off til it was catastrophic. 2000 LPT with 78k. This got me stranded and put the motor at risk of eating the shards of my failed turbine.
I replaced the failed GT17 with a new Td04 unit off of the Aero/Arc 9-5's. This is a more reliable unit and has more peformance potential with the right Software. There are quite few posts on turbo swaps, a new gt17 is 450ish+, a new td04 is 650ish+.

Might be valve steam seals... usually leaking when the car has sat for a while to let out some smoke. Turbo problems come at start-up but also under boost. Have the wife (or you) take it out and get on it a few times and look closely for some smoke.
Are you even losing any oil or coolant?

|Cambiocorsa||Hmm, gray smoke... blue usually denotes oil in the turbo and white usually means coolant (blown head gasket or something). Gray smoke could just be carbon deposits being blown out, but that usually happens at high revs not at startup. Does the smoke smell? If it smells like oil it probably is the turbo.|

Smoke on start up. Sluggish performance
My wife's 9-5 has been smoking lightly at start up and she says the performance feels down.
What do you guys think?
car has 91k miles on it.
I'm KINDA thinking turbo...
any ballpark ideas on what a new/used/recon turbo will cost? it's a standard 2.3t (LPT)
