mcrowley I took the underhood pad thingy off my last 9k...no paint problems...just a bit more noise. The worst part was the heinous looking unpainted part that was hiding underneath....oh well.

Its probably because of the silver hood, that reflects some light in there.

I think some people have paint problems because they just got the hood painted or resprayed with lacquer and they have problems due to the heat from the engine, but you have nothing to worry about.

VWSAABVT just yank it out somewhere and throw it away.

codesplice It's pretty much ALL for sound deadening. I've had mine out for almost two years now with no problems whatsoever.

if your engine is on fire, there is no way a fire suppressing blanket is gonna do jack shit. I believe it is just for sound suppresion. And for your parents: It is only for sound suppression.

Mine was off for over a year including many track days and my paint looked fine. I wrecked my car and have brand new paint with no liner right now and have had no problems thus far.

bassplya38 Well my mom wouldnt know the difference but my dad might get kinda mad cause he helps me work on my car but ill probably take it off for a little bit and if i have any problems then ill put it back on

dan-the-kid Am not sure about how protective from fire it is....am sure its good since its main jobs are to lower the temps on the hood and deaden the sound.

Just take it off with out them knowing, there a 90/10 chance something will go wrong I say. $0.02

If it was a jeep with the I-6 I don't doubt this. Those engines I swear get hotter then our turbo 4's!

Les Bouquins I personally leave mine in because I found that it's more valve noise.

dan-the-kid Yes, it is not only for sound deadening, but also for heat protection.

Its an easy mod, you just take it out. Some people worry about the paint peeling off the hood from its exposure to the engine heat, many people here do it, and have no problems with it.

On my 2000 9-3 SE, I just want to know what the blanket does under the hood? is it only for sound or for fire too? has anybody taken this out? and is it safe to take it out? i just wondered if it will make the engine and turbo louder then it is with the blanket there? thanks
