cabin vibrations

I have deleted the balance shafts (one out and hole obturated, one still on the car, by cancelled).
I also have Sport Engine Mount (Stage2) from Nick T. (who admits it "Slightly increases vibration in the cabin at idle (more like automatic at idle but not as bad) but keeps it at a reasonable level most people cannot tell. Reduces drivetrain slop giving a much better feel"
Sport Transmission Mount also from Nick.
The vibration in the cabin is quite noticeable, but everything comes with a price in this life!
As someone said as a review of this great products, "There is a slight increase in vibration at idle but I don't mod my car to make it feel nice at idle."
On the other hand, the vibrations with the engine mounts upgraded disappears completely as soon as the engine RPM climbs up away from idle thanks to those lovely Saab counter-rotating ballance shafts. So if you delete them, you will get more vibration. But more freely power output and better feeling of the engine!!!

I think Adam, Ryan, Nahum, Aaron, Cedric and other guys on TSL can give some good inputs.

I think a lot of it has to do with the differences in the motor mounts. I've had people comment on numerous occasions that the floor of the car felt like it was going to shake apart.

mvadenais People have found that doing this to a 9-3 or 9-5 yeilds too much vibration. My 9k w/ all poly isn't bad w/ vibration.

mcrowley Mine was done with the motor in the car, w/o pulling the pan. Head and timing cover were off instead.

just to emphasize what poisonbeef is saying.

if you pull out your balance shafts and put all the motor back together and put it back in the car, you might as well punch yourself in the face and go buy another motor. the balance shafts must stay in place to maintain your oil pressure. or if you pull them out you must have something in place of the shafts to maintain your oil pressure.

If people could just search, you would find that this subject has been talked about plenty of times.

PoisonBeef If you pull the shafts out themselves, you MUST block the passages that are in by the shafts too.

I left the shafts in to avoid that problem.

Adrenaline406 if you want to do it in the car, you're supposed to drop the pan, and cut the chain. This leaves the shafts and everything intact.

If you pull the engine, then you have the option of fully removing the shafts and all the other junk that gets left behind with the delete.

The reason for the block off plate or tapping the oil opening is to replace the balance chain tensioner (bct). The bct has an oil port in the back of it that feeds it oil and the balance chain too. If the chain is removed and the bct breaks, you will loose all oil pressure (major issue of course). So the best solution is to remove the engine, take of the shafts and replace the bct with an oil blocker.

Many ppl on here have pulled the chain and had great results, as in the bct never went bad, JZW for example. Maybe they can chime in.

turbojohnny I haven't read the whole thread but did you guys make it clear to the O.P. that you only delete the chain, and you leave the shafts in place?

mcrowley My car doesn't have the chain in it anymore either (also a 2.3 swapped 900). I didn't use the plate gs sells. Instead we tapped the passage in the block and used a grade 9 bolt to plug the hole. I've got about 6000 miles on it so far, no problems.

There is plenty of vibration, esp with gs motor and trans mounts.

spanky i deleted mine back when i was building my 2.3. It does vibrate some, you can feel the power. Couldn't tell you if it made a power difference.

Just use more lock tight!

Really, at idle and even 2 or 3k while looking at my engine I dont know if you could tell that they were not spinning.

skinny Is there a noticable difference to be had in deleting them? Would it affect a road going car that much to shake you senseless?

Only asking as I'm Stage 3 tuned and heading to Stage 4 but, like all, I want more!

PoisonBeef Some searching around will yield results.

I deleted mine a few months back while I had the engine out. You "can" delete them with the engine in but it is a PITA, small space and trying to cut a chain does not go well.

As far as impressions, the motor feels/sounds more raw. The increased vibration is only noticeable above 4k rpms. Did it help the motor out in HP or spin up? Maybe, its hard for me to tell as I also lightened the flywheel at the same time.

Castor Troy you delete them because the drag they cause steals horsepower.

the disadvantage of this is heavy vibration. the 2.3 is more affected by this than 2.0.

you delete them by removing the chain, and replacing the tensioner with the piece that nick sells

Deleting Balancer Shafts

I've seen this mentioned a couple of times on here and on the GS website regarding their drag car. What are the advantages of deleting the shafts? How do you delete them etc etc

Need MOAR imput!
