Yes. Its way easy. Seriously though, I think it can put out more HP than LH. MS is probably the best you could ever have though, because of the precise control. When i do run out of gas, I'll just go find a Volvo 5 or 6 port fuel distributor and put extra injectors on the manifold. It seems to be really smooth so far to 12 psi but it runs iffy when cold. like usual. I'm really happy with it though. My goal is to out dyno the seattle saab club guys. with their fancy laptops on the dash. LOL |

JK | Any bennefit to retaining the CIS rather than going to LH or MS?

saabsbreakdown | I've got a 16 valve turbo in my 1980 900 EMS. It's alot of fun. I retained the CIS (no LH) and upgraded to a H-motor style ignition system.

Well, this project has changed into a 16 valve turbo conversion. Hopefully to be done over the winter. I'll keep the B-motor, and perhaps eventually rebuild it. But in the meantime, I'll be able to drive the car. This will help considerably in moving the car around. |

Yikes dude... That thing has seen some better days! lol.... I would get the head rebuilt and stuff.... That bottom end looking the way it does, I would replace the rings, hone it, clean up the pistons, and put new bearings in.... But that's just me.... I wouldn't really trust the engine looking like that lol... Especially the rings if the coolant has been sitting there for a while... I'd say either way it needs the hone as well because those cylinder walls are pretty nasty lol ![]() It's totally up to you.... |

That car is the SHIT. A 99 is what my first memories of riding in a car were. The dash pic bought it all back. On a side note, I would like access to that "turbo" badge on the back of your car. It's superfab 80's STYLE!!!!! Serious. It's awesome. |

Yeah, yeah -- I see where this is going. I wish I had better options with the engine in the car. I have to chew on this for a few days. I do appreciate the dialog here -- it's helpful. |

Yeah...I didn't want to piss on the parade and suggest a motor-out sort of project, but if a little steel wool isn't going to be enough of a rememdy then it might be a good idea. I can't imagine that it would take too much more effort to pull the motor out as it sits right now, and luckily the palce that the car is located would be a short trip from my house to bring an engine hoist over...then again, this isn't my project so Greg will need to make the call on that one ![]() |

have either of you guys ever honed before? it's not that hard at all. you just hook the honing tool up to the drill, oil it, and go to town on each cyl sleeve. Remember you want to hone as little as possible to get the clean surface and end up with a nice 45 degree (I think it's 45 degree...) cross hatch pattern. Un-fortunately the engine must be out and the pistons removed to hone an engine. I guess if need be you could use some steel wool on the rust if this is to be an engine in job, but if you end up with no cross hatch pattern when you are done, it really should be re-honed because there are several issues that can crop up once the hone marks are no longer visible. Blue smoke sucks… |

I was thinking along the lines of what DeLorean said...and yes I'm pretty sure Greg is going to be taking the head in for a cleaning and rebuild, the other side of the head actually looks really nice, it's very clean and there is on varnish anywhere - the cylinders do look dir-ty though. Are there setups that would allow for honing the cylinder sleeves while the pistons are in place? The #1 cyl is really bad, but the others just seems to have carbon deposits and that's about it...I am kinda hoping that the bad sleeve could be cleaned up somehow, but I'm not sure what the best method short of pulling the motor and bringing it to be honed would be. Super-fine steel wool maybe? Its a damn shame how little room is under the hood of a 99 compared to a c900. Talk about knuckle busting! |

DeLorean | well doing a "good for now" job is always an option, but if you do a complete job the first time that engine should last you another 200,000 miles, probably much longer than the body of the car will last... plus you'll never have to have the engine apart again. Also, if you plan on doing the water pump while you are at it, I have the correct tool for doing it! If you need it I'd be willing to loan it out for free but I would want a deposit I'd return when the pump tool comes back.

Now I'm not so sure. I will do all the work on the head done that you suggest, and obviously I'll clean as much as I can with the engine still in the car. But if I pull the engine I just have the feeling it'll be months or longer before it goes back in. |

yeah, are you just planning on doing the gasket or a partial rebuild? With the engine in that condition, Personally I would hone it, clean everything, and install a new set of rings and bearings. I would also highly recommend getting that head cleaned, planed and a valve job. If you have a NAPA in the general area with a machine shop, they usually do great work. Ask the guy doing the work if you can just pay cash to him (just say you don't need a receipt and can pay cash) ![]() you might get away just replacing the gasket but if I were doing the job I like to be sure about things. Does look like a nice project! |

Exterior Pictures Pictures, as requested One thing that doesn't show up well in the pictures are the Inca aluminum wheels. A previous owner has sprayed white paint on them. They need to be redone, obviously. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
