short shifters
just noticed that now mp performance is offering a short shifter, but it is only $75 instead of genuinesaab's $300

heres the links:

is there any difference/advantage/reason to go for the $300 genuinesaab short shifter? -- if not, id much rather just buy it from Mpperformance and keep my $225!!

edit: i assume by getting either of those i would also need to get a new shift knob as well?

the genuine saab one is made by saabsavior, its is a replacement for the whole unit, the MP just changed out the shift lever. Have heard good things about both. and both seem pretty involved

is there any reason then to spend the extra $225 if they have basically do the same thing? is there any real advantage in replacing that whole unit ?

edit: and im ok with the involved part, i can take a whole weeked to do it if necessary, as long as the stuff isnt extremely complex or requiring specific tools that i dont have...and as long as the instructions r good i can do it!

What is the whole refundable core? Doesnt that mean you get 100 dollars back when you send them your old one?

That is typical with parts like these. From what I understand the genuine one just has more parts done by Taliaferro. In other words, they put the rod into the base and then you just put it into the car. Because they use a regular ock base, you send your in for a refund. So factor this in and its only $125 more. There must be other differences I'm not so sure of.

Most of the ime is just taking out interior panels. Not oo hard, just tedious not to break too many clips. MP has some good instructions on their site.

im not sure if you guys are seeing things correctly...

on the genuinesaab site it says "refunadable core" not "refundable core"

and also, when added to your shopping cart it lists the item as $300, i dont see where the refund would come in.... maybe im just confused

What you do with cores is mail them back your part after you install yours. That is why you pay up front, so that if you don't return your original part they are not out the money. When they get your original part, they cut you a check for the amount, in this case $100.

so that would mean that you pay 200 for the part, plus the 100 for the core, but then after you send them your old core then it brings the cost back down to 200, plus shipping

however would i have to pay shipping when i send them my old core? if so thats looking at now over $220.... even if they pay the shipping of my core its stil looking at over $210...... whereas MP's is about $85....

I'm not sure who pays the shipping to send it back. A lot of places will send you a bix or have you reuse the original box. You'd have to talk to genuine about this one.

meh, no matter about the shipping, i guess the point is for me, if theres no end difference, or no advantage to the expensive one

I'd go MP (and I did, as a matter of fact). The genuinesaab/saabsavior version is supposed to make the whole assembly a little more durable, but as far as installation goes, stromer is right. Most of the time and effort is taken up by removing everything leading up to the shifter. The MP version would involve two more steps than the genuinesaab (unbolting the shifter housing and removing the old shift lever) - other than that the install procedures are identical. Save the $115 and get yourself another part...

thats what im proly gonna do, and i can spend 75bucks A WHOLE lot easier than 300... lol (or even 200)...

then i can save up for my headers.... but thats for the other thread

oh btw, if i were to get either of these would i have to get a new shifter knob? cuz i cant get mine off and i raed somewhere if ur replacing the shift knob u like have to liek cut the existing one off... anything about that?

It depends... If you hold the base of the shift lever in a vise (or have a friend run a screwdriver through it and hold tight :wink: ), you can probably twist it off. It's hard (stuck on there with epoxy), but it'll usually go. However, if your knob is showing its age, you may want to just get a new one. You can get one for 20 or 30 bucks on - it'll make the job easier, and clean up your interior a bit.
