Distributor rotation equals hotter spark

Has anyone heard of this? I read somewhere that if you loosen the distributor retaining bolt and rotate the distributor (can't rememeber if top towards you or away), it will result in a hotter spark. Has anyone heard of this and what would be the benefits of doing this?

It was on cardomain before. I've removed the distributor before and looked at. It's set on a special offset, so it can only be installed one way, so therefore you cannot mess with the timing.

i remember reading about that somewhere too, but i also remember being confused as to how you would attain a hotter spark... i nany case due to what rob just said i guess is impossible..

not a hotter spark, but u r advancing or retarding the timing... that s all. on old muscle cars this is what u did.

The only way to advance timing on our cars is to remap the ECU, Jak Stoll does this, on my to do list...

Rob although that is true, that is not entirely true for the NA cars, u can turn the distributor to advance timing., u can do this on any car with a distributor, for the most part

Hence me asking about it here first. Perhaps the vehicle the article was about was a C900. Their timing could be advance right? IIRC the main method of advancement was vacuum control..

Correct, the only way to play with timing on a C900 is with the vacuum diafragm on the turbo version's distributor. I bet it would fit on an N/A N/G900..! Other than that, it's the ecu you want to reprogram

I don't know where you guys get these ideas firstly this whole "hotter spark" is complete fiction... By turning the distributor one way or the other, you are either going to advance or retard the timing. to check this accurately, you will need a timing light... I am not sure what the stock setting is on a NG 900 n/a but it's probably around 14 degrees BTDC. also, the stock setting is just right for your ignition system. depending on inputs from your knock sensor and the RPM signal the ECU will advance the timing as far as it is safe to do so AUTOMATICALLY! If you were to just un bolt the distributor and spin it 10 degrees advanced the ignition would no longer work correctly, the engine would constantly knock and you would have a good chance of blowing it up in a few weeks time.

I guess the moral here is if you don't know what the hell you are doing, don't fuck with shit

and another thing Rob. if you have every removed your distributor before, your timing is now off. the distributor rotor is fixed as you noted, however the timing setting is based on where the rotor is pointing inside the distributor body. When the distributor body is rotated even by a hair, it changes the setting. The way to set the timing is to un bolt the distributor body and rotate it while the engine is running and observing your timing light on the timing marks . if you removed the distributor chances are good it's either too far retarded (which would make your car slower than it already is) or too far advanced (which would make your car knock and ping).

I am sorry if I sound crabby in this post, but it really was just one thing right after another by you n/a guys that just made no sense...

Well I have taken the distributor out before, and it only goes back in ONE WAY, so therefore you cannot advance the timing or retard the timing. They thought about this already, it's in the haynes manual also.

this whole thread is an odd one which should have a warning lable - do not attempt if you aren't prepared for failures This whole concept makes little sense to me personally and I don't see why you need to be tweakin the distributor on a ng900 - oh wait - no turbo..... yeah, you guys need to stop looking for silly ways to gain power and just give in to the good side

so you are basically saying that the timing on an NG 900 is fixed and can not be adjusted at all? hrrumph.. that's odd *runs to the EPC*

yes I see that oddly enough the distributor clamp is in fact part of the distributor. that's probably a good thing because it means people can't screw with it too much yeah, not only is it not a good idea on an NG 900, but it looks like it CAN'T be done!

The timing on the 900 N/A is done within the ECU and can only be advanced from there. The distributor itself cannot be modified to advance the timing.
