900 2.3i now Trionic :)

Got the -95 900 project car running and driving on the T5 today. Took about 30 min. Spent some time getting it happy with speed sensor gear position calculates and other basic stuff. Plan to dyno it tomorrow on the base maps just to see where we are starting from. Then should be able to get timing and fuel sorted. Will spend most of the time finding MBT on the dyno.

Once this tank of fuel is gone and I have decent gas map will switch to E85. The turbo injectors should be plenty. Have to see how the high revs go, might need bigger injectors since higher revs = less on time possible.

Have to extend all the maps to 7200 or so.

Is this the first 900 2.3i to run T5?

Not sure on the RPM capability of the t5 ecu. Set it 7200 limiter. I know the t7 head will hold that. If the ecu will act reliably up there is another. I signed up on ecuproject but they seem to ignore me. Figured someone would appreciate a car that has more dyno time than the average. ;p

Really neat, keep us updated.

looks like fun, im sure the NA motors have plenty of potential, people just usually give up cause the turbos are easier. We'll be watching what you come up with, if we ever get a c900 rally car together, its gonna be an NA at least to start with.

as for ECUproject, you should PM Steve or Drew, I think they were trying to keep professional tuners out in the beginning, and were trying to do it across the board to be fair. Not sure where they stand on that as of now though.

It is going to take lots of mapping to get good power out of it. The baseline dyno with the stock 2.3i maps was sad.

I have now heard its the di, the black di is good to about 7500rpm and the red one is only good to about 7k or maybe 7200rpm. I have heard the main power wire to the di has to be modified if you want to run more rpm on the red di and that is what Maptun does to be able to run 7500-8k.

The DI seems to be the limiting factor, not the ecu...

Eric, Not a high priority project. Have had a bunch of other dyno scheduled and busy with other projects.. Always parts to make. Maybe this weekend. Going to try and autocross it Sunday.

John, The Spark becomes a problem since there is not much recovery time for the coils at high revs. But on a high output turbo car with very high BMEP it takes lots of spark energy to ignite. On a NA car with much less combustion pressure takes less spark. Think maybe a 1/4 of the BMEP.

Hey Nick...

Any reason why you didn't just go with a simple Bosch CIS (or CIS-E) injection setup? These are a dime a dozen at any wrecking yard off any pre-90 VW. CIS requires no remapping and can handle quite a bit of HP....before we moved to dual-webers on our Drag Rabbit, we used a CIS-Basic system and put down 13.1 (Normally Asperated of course and on an 8V motor). CIS is simple and makes the car very peppy.....one of the best FI systems for Normal Asperation IMO.
