Calling all 95-96-97 owners!

I have a co worker who has good taste, and would like to purchase a saab. Her budget is about 5k and she has settled on a mid-late 90's ng900.

So if any of you have any tips, please help! You know trouble spots, trouble spots that point to other trouble spots, you know how it goes.

I already told her to look for matenance records and the usual used car stuff.

I am going to print this out for her in a few days..

Thanks in advance!

hahah damn
i didnt even think of it that way..
everyone should have an MBC in those things!!

well then let me tell you this..
my brother has it in San DIego now with 98k-100k on it with racks on top and one DI and one O2 sensor later the thing still runs like a champ..
all his friends tell him to drive cause his is the most reliable.. and the fastest!

keep an eye on the idler pully,
and everything else keep up normal maintinace she should be fine...

burns got one for his mom and had to do some repairs i think..

Idler pulley is a huge thing. I got stranded in another state without one. It was hell. I guess same as everyone else said... DI... although I've never had trouble with mine... hmmm. O2 sensors I'm sure. You know man, as long as the thing has good oil in it and isn't abused, I'm sure she'll land a nice car.

For $5K, she can probably find a very decent 97 or 98. The 97 and higher got the bigger brakes found on the later 9-3. The 98 got the hydraulic clutch....

If she wants an auto, all years got a reliable Aisin-Warner tranny that holds up very well.
If she likes da shiftin', then go 98 all the way.

She'll want a turbo -- obviously -- and will want desperately to stay away from the V6 SE models for all the usual reasons.

The 98 models are tricky, because that year also includes a base S model with a turbo. Same engine/ECU as the SE, but cloth seats and no ACC. (Some of the S models had a leather/ACC upgrade but didn;t have the other SE suspension bits)

I hate to be ageist, but if the car was owned by anyone under 25, tell her to walk. You just KNOW that car was dogged.

Good info!

Thanks!

She was looking at one with 80k and a new clutch and timing chain. I told her that was scary.

New timing chain and a new clutch?

hmmmmm...

If the engine sounds ok, and you have a mechanic do a compression test on it, then why not!

I was thinking the gear box could be an issue....don't know what year it was though...That just screams, "I like to downshift, and cannot drive a clutch"

new timing chain at 80,000? Yeah....walk away! Maybe it was a 2.5 v6 with a new timing belt? Either way, no good - in my opinion

So what I'm getting out of this...

1. DI of course.
2. Idler pulley
3. 1998 for manual/hyd. clutch
4. Timing chain
5. NO v6
6. I may advise against the ACC
7. TurBoz!
Anyone else?

V6s aren't THAT bad...as long as you're willing to throw timing belts in them regularally

Also, if its a 94-95 make sure the suspension update has been preformed. It is around $600 otherwise.
