Flywheel - to resurface it or not...

So, replacing the clutch.

Got the old off and was surprised to see how clean/smooth the flywheel is.
Still can see semblance of the original machining.

Since my machine shop wont lighten it (they don't want to be responsible for future cracking etc.) - I am not sure whether I really need/want to have it machined.

Its doesn't cost much, money isn't the issue. But it doesn't "seem" like its needed.

Thoughts?

Thanks. I ended up taking it in. For 40 bucks it was piece of mind.

However the shop owner was able to show me that while it looked clean and flat, it was actually worn at a very minor angle - like a cone. More space on the outer edge than inner. While minor, it'll be good to be perfectly flat.

Now how to pull the rold rear main seal....

What is a typical cost to expect to pay for a surfacing of the flywheel and typical cost of a lightening of the flywheel?

pretty sure it was 50. They should resurface the clutch contact surface as well as the pressure plate mounting surface to maintain dimensions.

Always always always always resurface your flywheel when replacing your clutch. Always.

Maybe 4 years back I had my flywheel resurfaced and lightened by 3 lbs (from 15 to 12, the most that the machinist was comfortable removing from the back side) for about $90 IIRC.

I was upgrading to a Viggen clutch for my Stg3 2.0, so I wanted to do everything once.

I agree with most of what's been said here. Always, always resurface.

lightened flywheels

Mail in lightening for about 200. I'm planning on sending the v6 one in (it is super heavy). I can't find anybody local that will do it that I feel comfortable with. These guys (I've called them) seem like they know what they're doing.

Might be out of service for a bit if it is you dd.
