3 Door vs. 5 Door Viggen

Im looking for a vigeen, preferably a newer one (2001 or 2002). I was wondering about the differences in performance between the 3 and 5 door Viggens. It seems logical to say the 3 door would be faster, but how much? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think your logic is correct in terms of weight. I would say this is mostly negligeable.

It would just come down to personal preferrance. I prefer the 5-door myself.

The three door is cooler looking. But it does seem like it would be a little lighter also. A viggen is a viggen though.

does anyone know the actual weight's of the 3 door Vs the 5 door? generally with most cars, the 4 door models weigh the least with the verts weighing the most. the 2 doors are middle of the road. now with these 93's, since they both have nearly identical hatches, rooflines, and lengths I suspect that the weight difference is so small you could probably just skip the McD's for a few days in your 4 door and weigh less than a 3 door A lot of the time the 4 doors weigh less than the 2 doors mainly because of the amount of glass used to get a more "sporty" roofline out of the 2 door. this picture demonstrates this point well-

That's just a guess though

I am a 5 door person as well but I would probabaly take any viggen. I like the 3 door c900's but I think the 4 doors are sweet.

Speaking of c900's anyone know where I can find a cheap one in CT

has to be 5spd turbo would be nice

just to postulate more on the overall theory here... WRX wagons are negligibly heavier than the sedans (maybe even lighter if not going by factory numbers?). there's a lot of weight in that boot lid, and they have to have the crumple zone back there whether its a wagon or not.

as a general rule of thumb (there are exceptions) convertibles are usually heavier and have more body flex than their non-convertible counterparts.

that Cavalier example certainly paints an ugly picture. I think the styling differences are much more subtle between the 3dr and 5dr Viggen. for me the decision would come down to price, availability, and if you are going to be hauling around more than 1 other person.

2000 Saab 9-3

Curb Weights 1355 kg. (2990 lb.) - coupe
1375 kg. (3030 lb.) - sedan
1450 kg. (3200 lb.) - convertible

These are apparently some of the 1,100 changes because the weights for the 900 are different.

1998 Saab 900

3-/5-door Hatchbacks
1335 kg (2940 lb.)
(the same? or so negligible it wasn't worth reporting?)

Convertible
1415 kg (3120 lb.)

(Got these from the links in my SC FAQ thread. #'s are from GM Canada).

So the lighter 900's should be quicker then the heavier 9-3's?

So 40 lbs. Not enough to buy a car on, I don't think. As you add stuff to the car and gas to the tank, this would be a negligeable amount.

Ok so the weight is negligable, but what about handling? Are the wheelbases different? Thanks for the input.

IMHO 2 doors are much better looking, they overall have a sportier look and feel.
I wonder if 4 doors are more rigid because the B pillar on the 4 door is farther forward.

2 door + 5 speed + turbo = cool car

Ok there are a few execptions ...... but it's a pretty good formula

40 lbs is like having 5 gallons more gas in the car

I went with a 5dr due to

1) easier to haul people with the extra doors
2) due to 1, it's more versatile
3) the 5dr I found has orange seats

with the rigidity, both are pretty crappy & need work. 6pt brace, vrk & the list goes on otherwise it flexes probably worse then those cavaliers that were pictured. DAM fun car though!!
