The $250 Saab 900 SE 5 Speed

Hello all, I bought an NG for my girlfriend for christmas. It was $250. Its a 1996 900SE turbo 5 speed. About 120k, came with 2 sets of wheels.

It came with viking wheels and those 10 spoke BBS wheels from 9-5s. Both sets had completely mismatched tires that were bald or very old.

Problems:

Gauges intermittent
Both rear shock mounts rusted
2 bad flex pipes
Fuel leak (new fuel pump, investigating tomorrow)
SID has like 20% pixels, ACC missing some lights.
Some speakers work.
Ebrake broken

The exhaust and shocks are being repaired as I type by my trusted welder, Sam Finch.

Any advice with the gauges? I know its a common problem but dont know where to start.

Gauges,

Needs a new (used) instrument cluster or have the guys at BBA rebuild it for you.

Probably cracked elbows at the fuel lines where they plug into the pump.

I thought the gauges failed internally, meaning when they fail the entire cluster needs to be replaced.

I got a cluster off my NA if you want it, no boost gauge = no fancy shit

Looks almost exactly like my $50 ng900!
Had most of the same issues, except it also didn't go into reverse.
Good find!

No, I just put them on because every other rim was unbalanced and worn tires.

Nice car at a sweet price.
If you ever get the chance swap shifter linkage to a 97' onwards,.... big improvment.

Tonight Mike D and I worked on some of the issues. The exhaust and shock mounts are fixed and the car drives hilariously well.

Tonight we did plugs, vac lines, oil/filter change, gearbox oil change and fixed the fuel leak.

The fuel leak was bad and stupid. The knucklehead who did the pump clearly broke one elbow and used some vacuum fittings and silicone to patch it together. We put on a new plastic elbow using the awesome open flame near gasoline method.

Next up is SID and gauges. It seems like the trend is that the gauges come back on when I punch them or go over a bump when the cabin is very warm. It also needs speakers very badly.

I am going to use these wheels that came with the car:

Going to run those with stock size tires for the summer 205/50-16. In the winter I will run my klingons with snows until they run out and they will become the summer tires.

If you got the time/patience I'd take em all apart and go over each lead. Making sure everything is making good contact.

Or pay a few bucks for another cluster/sid.

Good catch on this NG.

Glad to hear it's cleaning up!
Only advice I have is with the tires. Stock saab sizes are odd, and expensive. If you search right around it, there are more options and less expensive(even for the same tire) I think its 215/45 or something

Lol craig. 205/50-16 is like $250 for summer only.

I plan on taking the gauges apart this weekend.

I feel stupid for passing up a $350 900. Then again it was an S, was pretty crusty, and needed an speed output sensor.

Good score here.

Have fun with the rear shock mounts just did them on my 95 900 coupe. Check the trunk pan if the shock mounts are rusty the pan will be too usually. I am in the process of welling new sheet metal in my trunk right now.
