Exhaust Question

I feel kind of dumb for asking this, but how much does it take (exhaust leaking) for it to trigger a CEL?

I have been chasing this CEL for the rear o2 sensor and it is just refusing to go away. I was listening under my car and heard the hissing sound that tells me there is an exhaust leak but I know it is fairly small. I reseated the DP onto the turbo to get a better seal, and reset the ECU but it has been coming back sooner and sooner.

The car might be going to California for good, and there is no way I would pass emissions if I have to keep reseting the ECU to get rid of the CEL for a few days.

I don't know if an exhaust leak will cause a CEL, something i haven't heard of. but anything is possible. where along the system do you think it is leaking from?

An exhaust leak upstream from the o2 sensor(s) can cause a CEL.
If you're having a "slow response" from the o2 sensor you'll probably need to replace with a new one.

I should have included:

-Brand new Saab o2 sensor
-newly repaired junction going from the sensor to the ECU (in the harness)

It is definately between the turbo and the rear o2 sensor, I have always known there have been some pin holes in the welds that Jak Stoll left there. I will take the downpipe off soon and have any holes I see welded up.

the best way to locate holes is to seal one end of the downpipe with something and fill the pipe with water and look for leaks---

it'd be impossible to view those holes w/ your eye.

Ok. The downpipe is clearly leaking now, so I will have to find a time when I can take the DP off and bring it to a welding shop.

Go into T5 suite and delete it.

One problem with that; the car might be going to California and that would mean it would recieve a giant "FAIL" in emissions testing. I might just wait till it is out there, but if I get the opportunity I will just take off the DP and bring it to a local welder since I am 100% sure it is leaking and causing the CEL.

You could delete it in T5 suite and leave it in and also fix the leak.

Send a message via AIM to viggenkid
if you delete it in t5 suite its not going to fail emissions.

Are you sure? I'm fairly sure this issue is purely leak related but if the CEL remains then that is what I will do!
