The Luck of the SAAB...

Of all the times my 1999 SAAB 9-3 has let me down, it has once again raised the bar. I start my new job tomorrow, and was out at the post office today. When I came out there was coolant everywhere. Go figure.

Needless to say I had it towed home and had a look at it. It was spewing coolant from the area of the firewall where the heater core hoses are. I felt around to see if one or both had come loose, but they seem to be on there good. Since I can't get under the car to get a closer look I had to improvise.

I removed the heater core hoses from they're respective connections on the engine and spliced a loop in using a 12mm socket as a coupler (all I had on hand). So far no more leaks or overheating. The only drawback at the moment is the lack of a heater, but I won't need that for at least a couple more months. That should give me time to fix it correctly or buy a new car. This OG is approaching 200k and I was considering using the T5 harness and ECU out it for my c900 anyway. It's left me stranded at least four different times, and I'm beginning to question it's usefulness as a reliable daily driver.

Anyway, my apologies in advance for the lengthy post. I guess watching Macgyver has it's benefits after all. Headed to the Distillery to knock a few back and celebrate the new employment. Cheers!

Nice improvised repair. Not to be off topic, but where in Rochester are you and how long have you been here?

I'm in Henrietta, and have been here for about 2-3 months. Originally from central NY.

Thanks! I'll definitely take you up on that. I've gotta get used to the new job over the next several weeks, but otherwise will be around. I'll PM you.

Ok, well I have found a replacement daily driver. After next weekend the OG9-3 is going off the road until I decide what to do with it (Maybe T5 parts car for my c900???).

I am buying a mid-nineties Jeep Cherokee:

I have had them in the past, and love them. Just needs some alloy's and a replacement CD player. While I was car shopping I found this Wheeler Dealer episode with a SAAB turbo:

I know it's off topic, and is most likely a repost...but oh well.

Mr Guru used to live in Henrietta! We were thinking about going back someday.

nice work picking up a cherokee as a reliable DD. thats actually what i do most of my driving in. hopefully its a 4.0/auto/ no abs. Gas mileage isn't the best but cost of ownership/repairs per mile is quite low vs. a snaab. Any Jeep questions , shoot them my way.

@ Marksy: Yeah I've had each generation of Cherokee over the years (1979 Chief, 1989, 1995, and 1999). I love them. They've never let me down. I'm really hoping that this way I'll be able to give my c900 the attention it deserves, rather than pouring more money into the 9-3.

@ Guru: I actually moved here a few months ago. My girlfriend has a house off of E. Henrietta Rd. I like the area. There is plenty to do, and downtown Rochester is close.

Finally had time to tear the 9-3 apart and find the problem. I had initially tried my luck at replacing the heater hoses ($30), but once I started the car back up coolant was coming out of the AC condensation outlet below the heater hose pipes on the firewall.

Today was the first warm day we've had here in Rochester in weeks, so I tore the center console and glove box out (thanks for the tip Brad (SaabDriver87) and found the problem.

I could probably get away with just replacing the broken piece, but I found an after-market heater core assembly for ~$150. Glad I found this before winter comes creeping up.

Just got your text, glad you found the problem. It was definitely a nice enough day to get it fixed.
