Snow tire debate poll

Snow tires, New in front, or new in rear, causes more oversteer when installed in rear, as suggested. Would you rather have snows installed with most tread in front, causing oversteer, or more tread in rear, causing understeer?

A few years back, I had 2 snows only on my 84T C900. I switched them from front to back a few times. On the front is by far the best. You get zero (or next to zero) traction with them on the back. It was scary both ways. There is no balance at all. I got 4 when I bought my Viggen and loved driving in a fresh snowfall. Get 4 snows and driving is fun. Only 2 and it's a big challenge to stay out of the ditches.

two best up front, but need them in the back too. i drove a car with snows in the the front and all seasons in the back and it was harder to control than a car with all season's all around.

Yup.

Best bet is to rotate them regularly and avoid having any of them wear out before the others.

Its safer to have the two better on the rear axle because in any non-straight braking situation the car is going to come around on you.

That said I had some brand new snows up front and some 75% snows in the rear, it worked fine for me and now they are all about 75%, but on my wife's car I put brand new all around.

i believe that the situation has 4 snow tires, two half worn from last season, and two brand new

the question is where to put the season old ones vs the brand new ones

Ahh, sorry mis read it. I have always been taught to put the best tires in the rear to prevent spinning out, and all tire manufacturers here recommend the same.

I put new snows on the front (unstudded) and some more worn snows on the rear (also unstudded) of my '91 Legacy AWD. It was the most fun setup imaginable. Instant throttle modulation drift all winter long.

I would not recommend this on any 2WD setup.

I ran 4 new studded General Altimax Artics last year on my Subie. @ $85/tire mounted there is no reason not to get all new ones. Although it was less fun, my ice traction was way better.
