Drug 9-3.....?????

SO......

My friend and I bought a 1999 9-3 automatic base model a few months back for $1250. We purchased it from an auto shop who told us they bought it at auction and did not want to deal with repairing a Saab. The title revealed that the car was titled to the US Marshalls. It had a blown HG and needed some other odds and ends.

The first time I saw the hatch area I knew something was askew. I couldn't really put my finger on it at first, but it seemed as if some odd crash repair had been done. I started to notice things that were different. For one the angle pieces that make up the bumper support and cargo hold downs were not there. (or so it appeared). The floor also had odd ripples to it, with what appeared to be sound deadening material applied over the top.

Needless to say we still bought the car figuring we could make some cash off fixing and selling it.

We brought the car back to the garage and started working on it; we replaced the head gasket, radiator and the flex pipe as well as the right headlight lens.

The car has had some starting issues as well as a persistent airbag light, and because of other projects has sat for a few weeks.

That is until the other night when we decided to really look at the rear floor. Others didn't believe me when I said there was something not right about the hatch floor area. I started to notice more things wrong. for one the ridge between the hatch floor and the rear seats was not there.....

Also the carpet didn't really seem to fit correctly. The other oddity was the fact that the spare tire well seemed smaller and was missing the foam that holds the jack in place.

Comparing this to my friends mom's 9-3 really revealed what this car was missing.

some more pics....

I next brought up the point that there is no cabin air vent, then my friend noticed that the original sun roof drains had been filled and that they had been relocated.

We removed the bumper cover to reveal the cabin air vent had been sealed off and upon busting this out we saw the hidden area.

We noticed something odd in this compartment. We couldn't make out what it was except that it had two wires running to it. We had to know what this was. So naturally the thing to do was to remove the false floor.

The floor was attached by what appeared to be some sort of black sealant and to the untrained eye could pass for factory.

With a sledge hammer and a chisel we began beating on the seam and the floor began to separate rather easily.

As we proceeded with this process (beer in hand) the sound deadening material started to break apart which revealed the TRAP DOOR. The seam was very well hidden under the material which is why we didn't notice it.

Once pried open a bit we could clearly see that the wires ran to a Linear actuator. I was able to reach in and rip the wires out. Once hooked to a battery the door rose.

As you can see this is not something you find everyday.

Check out the video of the door in action.

Sorry It is a bit dark. We will try to get some more footage of it later.

Damn, I saw this car and I would have never thought. I am actually pretty amazed you found that at all, If you didn't have another 900 to compare it to you would never have known that was down there.

Neat!

Woah. That is certainly rather interesting and perplexing. I wonder what it was really used for.........maybe a concealed weapons carrier. Could be plausible as it was titled with the U.S. Marshals.

I might be more inclined towards the drug thing if it was titled to the ATF.

In the end who knows. Maybe you should call the US marshal service and ask for shits and giggles.

Well, the U.S. Marshals dispose of seized assets.

My only theory is that it was seized then used and then when the HG blew they just auctioned it off.

Awesome. This is just a typical saab story. It seems every old saab that you pick up with the intentions of making some money has something odd about it. You should sell it to kids that sell drugs. They would probably pay top dollar. hahahaha or gang bangers with illegally purchased guns.
