Turbojohnny's build thread?

seeing as how i have a spare motor and tdo4 sitting in my garage i've decided to rebuild them. i'll eventually ship the tdo4 to chadwick to let him do his thing but i'll assemble everything myself.

i've already built myself an engine stand and torn down the motor. soon enough i'll take things to get machined and i'll put it all back together.

now for the pictures...

toorrow i'm planning on cleaning up the block, and probably going to the local speed shop to see what they'll charge for the machine work.

189k miles, but the previous owner beat the piss out of it, and then i got a hold of it too.

Edit: the bearings in the motor don't look bad because i had just replaced them before i had swapped motors.

i put new bearings in hopes that it would solve my knocking problem, but the rod bearing on cyl #4 had spun and worn on the crank journal. the new bearings didn't solve the problem, but the used motor that i dropped in did.

if by some chance this motor is done before carlisle i won't drop it in before the show. i'd rather have an old motor in the car to mess around with while i have a brand new one waiting in my garage.

you can't have any fun when your motor still hasn't been broken in yet.

i stopped by the speed shop a little bit ago and got some prices, $135 to cut the crank and about $350 to balance the roatating assembly, and then another $325 for a valve job on the cylinder head. so that's about $810 for all the machine work i need done. Turnaround time was estimated to be about a month, because this is the time of year everyone is having their motors built.

i'll probably drop the stuff off next weekend.

ad the shop i'm having the work done at is Jan-Cen racing.
they're responsible for this...

yeah, no need for forged internals. i may do a thing or two here and there, but this will be a pretty stock rebuild other than the oversized bearings.

you should find a t7 head to bolt on instead of having your t5 head refurbished.

i've been looking at that thread, that also means frankensteining a t7-t5 hybrid intake manifold so i can use my t5 tb. or at least making a t7-t5 tb adapter plate. that's a little more involved than i want to get.

go big or go home.

i like how this thread has productive updates. have the flywheel shaved too, or get the spec one.

i picked at the motor a little more today, started cleaning and degreasing the block...

from my inspection, this block is just fine. i can still see the cross-hatching in each cylinder, and i can still see the marks the hone left in the main caps too.

Let me know if you go the T7 head route. I used to run a B205R with the T5 throttle body and made a phenolic adapter plate....
