Philosophical Question

Interwebs says that if a battery completely dies, and especially if it completely discharges in the cold, not only is it dead, but resuscitating it will severely damage the alternator and be a fruitless effort. Is this true or internet apocryphal?
Thanks,
-Cm

If one of the cells shorts or flips polarity it could. Usually what just happens is it "doesn't hold a charge."

Trickle charge it at low current for a few hours, then go to the medium charge setting on a plug-in battery charger. Once's it's charged, let it sit for an hour or so, and if you get 12.x V at the posts it's probably fine. If it's back down to 10.x or even low 11's it may be shot.

Thanks for the help! I was pressed for time so I just bought a new battery. The thing sat for over two months during the coldest and snowiest winter on record. Wouldn't jump start for prayers or money.
