Car and Driver likes the new 9-5.

It's amazing, considering the beatdowns they usually hand out.

The 2011 9-5 is a very competent luxury sedan that looks good, drives decently, and offers a lot of room for its occupants. The clean interior design is certainly different from the class norm, and the car is priced below its German rivals—although perhaps not by as much as one might expect. The 2.0T is actually more likable than the Aero, if only because it manages to make more from less. Which, perhaps, is the way a Saab should be.
The print article also has high praise for the ergonomics as well and they call the center stack "highly intuitive" It's odd that it's not in the online version.

Anyway, awesome.

Yeah, I was surprised by that too. Good for Saab.

great to see more positive reviews

I just do not understand why they make a car around 4300 lbs then give it 300hp. To compete in the power game it needs a 50HP bump.

Great news. I can't wait to test a 4cyl w/the manual trans; I took an Aero out for a good 30 minute drive a few weeks ago, and was impressed, but it felt a little heavy and I'm not a fan of automatics. I'll be in the market for a new daily in a couple years, and either that or the next 9-3 will be on my radar.

I just want to test drive the 2.0T Manual FWD version - if it's anything like the Aero version or better I'm sold - pending the price of course. Again - the Wagonback version would be nice to see too.... but I could see that with XWD and the 2.0T like the 9-3X Combi which I'd love in a manual.

Will there ever be an aero V6 stick?

bruceinmiami 11-02-2010 06:39 AM

i look forward to some magazine comparisons.
i imagine the saab to be more personable.

It cost a little more yes - but it makes up for it with the Free Scheduled Maintenance - none of those other cars come close.... Still not a reason to buy it, but a consideration. Warranty is on par with the competition - but it would be nice if Saab would bump it up a little more to compete a little and give the customer a little more back for the premium price.

I was a little shocked the MB E class is cheaper! (by a little)

yeah, i was too! and an e-class is typically the best benz. they sell so well for good reason.

It showed you picked a FWD A6 - do they make those?

What's with the weight? Why in the hell does it have to be that heavy? I had a lifted jeep with oversize tires and would go anywhere I needed it to, and it weighed in 300lbs less than that. That is insane for a car of that size. Bet it gets the same mpg that tank of a jeep did too.

Palmer 11-02-2010 08:40 PM

Expected options make weight.

DeLorean 11-02-2010 08:45 PM

expected and mandated safety features do as well.

Palmer 11-02-2010 08:52 PM

Yep.

bruceinmiami 11-02-2010 09:21 PM

weighs as much as an audi a8 or s550. (4300lb vs 4400lb)
gm really needs to engineer their chassis more thoroughly.

I recall something about the Alfa chassis Saab helped develop for what was supposed to go under a new 9-5 weighing a bunch because Saab kept on make it stiffer and stiffer and safer.

Saab safety is surely one of the reasons the car weighs so much.

Quickly looking at the Specs, it has the most power, most space, and comparable gas mileage. Longest and second best turning circle. I'm sure there are some other favorable points for the 9-5. It's prob. the safest car of the bunch.

The A6 trim level/drivetrain is not comparable to the others.

Once you've driven this for awhile( I'm going on 6 weeks and 3800 mi) a lot of these observations seem to fall away. It's a completely different ride from the last gen 9-5. Weight, xwd, tranny, power, suspension, even the 3 choices (comf, intel sport) all make the driving experience no where near what my 04 Aero drove like. Personally, (and it's all personal taste) I love the way it drives. It's much tighter, quieter and more refined. I think it drives much smaller than it looks. Just my $.02
