Mobil 1 0w30 oil analysis

since many people think i make totally unfounded comments, and have no reasoning behind bashing mobil 1...the proof is in the pudding.

pay attention to the fact that the only thing the oil was good at was detergents.

2007 9-3 aero V6. M1 0w40 all its life.

-the viscosity was LOWER than the number on the bottle
-the zinc and phosphorous are well below industry average
-moly is high BUT...

moly does you know good. ZDDP and phos are HIGH PRESSURE additives, moly is not. Moly can not do a good enough job when lubing areas like the bearing seats and cam journals, so if you have film break down in any of those areas, there are not enough anti wear additives to do you any good.

you can clearly see that Mobil met the API SM class standards, and it is simply so that they can continue selling shitty v6 and v8 motors that meet fuel standards (moly improves fuel mileage while zddp and phos shorten lives of catalytic converters in high amounts)

this car has only been on M1 because it was still under warranty, now it will be changed to a useful oil, most likely the amsoil euro spec.

One important point is that the oil was also used for 5,300 miles. That's probably almost standard for most synthetics, but I wonder how the data would look if the oil was analyzed at 3,000 or 4,000 miles, instead of at 5,300. Looking at the above data makes it easy to see why "recommended factory drain intervals" are completely insane.

the mileage only matters when reading the TBN not the anti wear additives.

also, the sample oil was 6400 miles, industry listed averages are done on 5300 miles of wear.

Pay attention to the dates of those posts and oil useage.

the whole point im showing here is that in the past year or so when Mobil was the first company to jump on the bandwagon and move to an SM class oil, they removed all the useful anti wear additives in favor of lowering emissions to be able to stay factory fill for good ol GM.

since the change to SM class, there are only about 2 weights of M1 that are not total garbage in the anti wear department.

How about Penzoil and Syn Tech I run that Wal-Mart stuff in the Geo Most of the time and Penzoil in everything else. $19 for 5 QTS works for me, but it used to be $18 - then $21 (they sold none) so it's back to $19
Syn Tech is like $17 for the jug
