suggestions for a new car

What up guys!

Well... Biggest news in my family is that my pops wants to give his old car (02 bmw 325xi), and buy a new car. He saw this ad on craiglist and wanted me to do some research on the model.

http://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/1004179990.html

There it is. he was wondering if there are any known issues with the 03 9-3 sedans... I suggested getting wrx, another 3 series, maybe a older s4?

He has about 8-12k to spend on the new ride, any suggestions?

Here are some of my own...

I know he'd like a 2001/2002 2-door SE 9-3... But I can't seem to find any deal, or well... even ads on those saabs =\

The front ends can make clunking noises which is usually due to the sway bar bushings/end links. The radios can be a pain, amps, speakers, etc.

03' was the first year. Generally many say to get an 04+.

Depends on what his driving needs are. If he spends more time in the car and on the highway then the 9-3SS may be a good call, its a nice place to spend miles.

My cousin has a 2002 WRX that I drive all the time and its a great car. The 2002 had some trany problems and his WRX with less miles has already gone through a clutch and the shifting feels a bit worn. That may just be him though and the car lived 20,000 miles in SLC (hills.) Fuel economy blows. I recently put 18,000 miles on a 2005 9-2x (subaru 2.5rs) in 5 months and I didn't die but the noise and the seats got to me. Its a great car but for comfort and distance the 9-3 wins hands down.

If he has a long commute and/or values comfort the 9-3 is great (also amazing MPG).
If he only needs the car for short trips or really likes a more raw feel the WRX wins.

BTW Here's a shameless plug for my 9-3 that is for sale in North Jersey.

I would advise against buying an '03.

I've had my SS since '04 and I'm at 60k miles on it, and I've loved every mile.
