Pre-Purchase Key Test

I've been reading into the 9-3SS for quite some time now, sitting on the fence as to whether I want to dive into another Saab, or jump ship to the 4 rings or something similar. One of the preferred "pre-purchase" checklists on these forums (I'll have to scrounge the link) suggests rapidly cycling insertion of the key and then removal, all the while listening for the CIM to unlock the steering wheel. Every SS that I've test driven has failed this test--meaning that after 5-10 cycles the CIM remains open or closed. After a "rest' the CIM begins to again respond to the key. Is this actually indicative of an ailing CIM or is this more internet lore?
(yes I used the search function and pulled up a mother-ton of people frantically trying to TS/repair a broken ISM/CIM, but nothing more about test-drive procedure)
Thanks!
-Cm

I seem to remember that the lock will stop actuating when it's working properly if you rapidly and repeatedly insert and remove the key, but it's been a while. I had some cars come through that would not always actuate the SCL and didn't seem to have a problem. They just seem to be a very odd intermittent system.

Like I said, I am not 100% on that test. Hopefully someone with a 9-3SS chimes in if I'm full of crock or not.
