My Springtime in Sweden experience

Unfortunately, I did not pick this car up.

I did however have the chance to check this car out and drive it.

Locally, there is a man selling a 1988 900 SiS.

Its an automatic. Apparently one of four automatics built?

My interest in this car is quite high, as its in decent shape. The paint was redone and not that great, but not horrible. It has a dash pad overlay. And a seam has come undone on the back seats. The rest of the interior is perfect. The windshield is cracked right up the middle, but is a small crack. The hood cable is broken, but he has a new one.

Mechanically, it needs some things. First, the speedometer bounces around like a five year old on crack, the odometer does not work, nor the trip. The A/C needs to be charged. Additionally, the driver's window is slow to roll up or down and the battery light is on when you start the car, but goes away when you give it a bit of pedal push.

Driving: The car doesn't go into full boost at all, but I can hear the turbo spool during normal driving. It also has a tick when its running, obviously at idle. I'm not sure if its the injectors or something else.

It was originally a Texas car until six years ago. There are TX window stickers from inspection to prove this. The underside of the car is spotless. No rust on the suspension, no rust on the body.

Overall, its not a bad car, but needs a few things

No warning lights or anything other than the battery at start up.

What is this car worth?

It's worth w/e you and the seller can agree too... Personaly I think those pictures make it look great and the issues you've described are not major - but clearly some cost will be involved to get this car to "GOOD" condition. Sounds like it has fallen into the "POOR" classification based upon what's wrong with it as far as I would deem it. This should help you buy said car for a reasonable dollar.

NADA Collector Car Value for a 1988 c900 Turbo Vert is as follows;

Original MSRP: $29,740

Retail
Base Price $3,975 (Low)
Retail Average $5,400
Retail High $7,550 (HIGH)

Quote:
Low Retail Value
This vehicle would be in mechanically functional condition, needing only minor reconditioning. The exterior paint, trim, and interior would show normal wear, needing only minor reconditioning. May also be a deteriorated restoration or a very poor amateur restoration. Most usable "as-is".

Some of the vehicles in this publication could be considered "Daily Drivers" and are not valued as a classic vehicle. When determining a value for a daily driver, it is recommended that the subscriber use the low retail value.

Note: This value does not represent a "parts car".

Try and get it near $2000 IMHO.... I would not consider $3000 personally, but again - it's an automatic SIS which sucks, but again more rare, but should not make it worth more by having an rather worthless transmission. Based on the low value description above - this car does not meet this criteria yet - so I would not rank it's value at the LOW shown above - more like the $1000-$2800 price range IMHO.

To the right person.....the dash badge itself is worth $1000-$2800. If the car was 100% rust free, and has had a poor paint job, but was all there, which this car certainly seems to be, I'd have NO PROBLEM forking over $5k for it. Yeah, slushbox sucks, but its still the rarest C900 ever made, and we all know how tough it is getting to be, to find a clean one. That dash badge is the difference between a $1,500 decent looking car, and one of the most sought after 900's built.

I do not know how sought after these cars really are, I can't say I am out looking for one - yes they are/were very nice in their hay days, but most have become subject to rot (yes this makes a solid find worth more). Honestly - I can not see this car being worth more then $2000 if it was just a standard c900 Vert - it has paint issues, dash problems - charging issues, and interior wear items which all equal time/money to repair. Being it is a real SIS (if you can prove someone didn't just SPG kit it and stick a rare dash badge on it) I agree it's worth more - such my reccomended price. If this car was more original in the paint department and had some documentaion I'd agree it could be worth closer to 5k - but unless it's there I wouldn't IMHO. It's still an older Saab - it's not a Stanley Steamer afterall... I can show you a much nicer 1993 CE HB for $3995 right now which is a bargin buy since it's just under 100,000 miles and looks prestine. I think the CE are a nicer car IMHO - but they don't fetch as much re-sale because as you said, the SIS is more rare. Offer low - feel the seller out, you never know, you might get it for way less then you would ever imagine. If you have the cheese then go for it - these are just my opinions. I am a bargin hunter - I don't walk around with $5,000 to put down on a car at anytime. My vintage was the most expensive car I've ever bought - until our 9-5 (but that was about $700 more then the 1973 I bought) lol Good Luck - I hope you or another link member can buy it. It looks to be worthy of a proper resurection.

Just personal opinions then.....I'd MUCH prefer an '88 vert to a 93 CE. No ABS, no airbag, but has the newer brakes, etc. For that dash badge...you just can't find one and slap it on a car. They made 288 of them. I see the point in "its just an '88 vert", but a CE is also just a '93 900 turbo. Both have a little extra flash. Depends on whether you want extra power, different wheels, piping on your seats and a wood dash, or if you want SPG wheels, SPG panels specifically for a vert, and a dash badge.

Each has its pros and cons. Its strictly my opinion that aside from the 1991 Beryl Green SPG, the '88 SiS is the prettiest 900 ever produced, hands down.

1991 Beryl Green SPG = WIN

SIS have been both found in junk yards and bought for parts cars cheaply before...
I know one person locally who has sold a SIS in the past year for stupid money, and myself and others suspect it may not have been a real SIS for our own reasons.

It's just one of those things - be careful and look for as much documentation as you can find. The more there is the more is worth. I know I would hate to buy a "rare" Saab or anything else and later discover I had paid a premium for a very nice clone...

I don't have a window sticker, but I have warranty paperwork from when the car was sold, also showing SPG Convt.

What's the mileage? If it's not unreasonably high, BUY the car NOW if you can get it for $2500 or less. All of the aforementioned issues aren't terrible to fix.

engine tick- probably from sitting
boost issues- vacuum lines or something else minor
Speedometer, AC, etc- all not to bad
Paint- if there's no rust, your in a great position. Maybe a body man can detail the crap out of it and improve the paint (thorough wetsand, compound, polish, etc). If not, you could probably have it repainted for a decent price.

Mileage here is what we really need to give you a good price. That being said, if it's $2500 or less, I'd jump on it. It certainly isn't going to depreciate in value any further and you could just store the thing, if need be. Good luck

The odometer stopped at 165,000. But, who knows how long ago.

The car is a great five to ten footer. Looks AMAZING from that distance, but up close you can see the orange peel in the paint.

He apparently is leaving for the big hospital in Indianapolis this weekend and if I don't buy it, its going back into a storage shed for two months until he gets back.

Orange peel can be saved easily through wetsanding. Depends on how much clear is left though.

At that mileage, I'd be skeptical unless he had records/reciepts of past maintenance (headgasket, engine rebuild, tranny rebuild, etc).

What is he asking for it?

I will not be able to get this car after all. I tried talking my dad into it, but he is set on a C4 Corvette.

I would get this as a DD, but I couldn't stand to drive it in the winter, and it would have to be my DD car.

Also,if anyone is interested, PM me for the owner's number.

I bet if someone waved three grand cash under his nose he would take it.
