New toy

I just picked up another Saab 900T convertible for the herd. A 1993 LeMans blue with black top and light grey interior. 103K miles, $1300. Don't need it, but was just too good to pass up.

The good: No rust anywhere--and I mean anywhere; immaculate interior--not a crack, worn spot or flaw anywhere; strong running engine with plenty of boost and a smooth shifting auto tranny; removable-face Alpine stereo with CD and satellite radio; new tires on Comm Ed wheels; new breaks; new top and rear curtain; no water or air leaks anywhere.

The bad: electric seats are whacked and someone (who doesn't know shit) tried to fix them--they are still in pieces; top won't go down although motor runs; hood-release handle is a pair of vice grips; usual dings and scratches expected on an auto-auction car; speedo/odo doesn't work (carfax shows milage to be accurate); fog light lenses cracked; front passenger wheel (and possibly lower control arm) is bent; loud exhaust leak aft of the cat somewhere.

There is nothing wrong with this car that I don't have the parts for, or that I haven't fixed on other Saabs. So, I just couldn't pass it up. This will make two 900T convertibles and two 900T coupes in the yard.

I spotted the car at a local repair shop. When I pulled into the shop to look at this car the guy said; "I guess you've got a car sickness, huh." I said; "No my car's fine, I want to look at that Saab you've got there." thinking that he was asking me if I was there to have my car fixed. He said; "No, I mean that Saab thing where you have to own a whole bunch." I guess the stereotype is true.

Very, very nice. I was looking for that color before I did the ComEd. All I could find were autos though. Oh well. Nice ride.

Up and running as of a couple weeks ago (finally)--the new daily driver.

Still needs a few things--some minor body work--paint detailing. But it runs really well and is a good solid driver. I think it was definitely a beach house car. No signs of salt crud on the carpets from winter driving, but I vacuumed up a lot of sand.

Not the best pics, just a couple quick shots in the corral with the others.

Interior got a complete detail last Sunday. The passenger seat is out of the car until I fix a broken cable sheath. Still need to fix the flat driver's seat too. I'm considering doing the door panel inserts and speakers with royal blue microsuede.

If I drove by a house with that many c900's I would slam on my brakes.

Worked on the front seats this weekend. I had flat-seat syndrome and broken cable sheaths.

Before:

After:

Took both the seat and back skins off and as you can see, the fabric tufting wire sheaths are toast. I've never seen a c900 seat that this hasn't happened to.

I stitched the wires back on directly to the excess leather flaps at the seams using heavy nylon upholstery thread and a big-ass needle. I double-knotted every 3/4" or so. I left the old fabric sheaths in place (what was left of them) so that the original stitching doesn't loosen.

On to cable sheath repair. Didn't order new sheaths from eeuro so I planned to just do the fuel line and hose clamp repair. They were broken too bad, so I improvised. I had some soft copper tubing that just happened to fit perfectly over the old cable sheaths, so I bent it to shape, slid it on and crimped the ends--permanent repair. There, now it's fixed!

Nice looking car, interior looks great. Never seen that repair method used or seats, interesting. How many more 900's can you squeeze on the lot? Haha

Nice repair on the seat bottom there. I guess I'd never thought about why some seats are flat and some are puffy still. Makes perfect sense now. Nice new DD!!!
