1970 99 coupe GT3

Resuming work on my race car project, had a post on here way back in the day but figured I'd give a little more history on it. This car was a sister to Jack's car from MSS in NY, Jack's car has long since been gone and as far as I know this is the only one left in the nation set up like this (I could be wrong). I have SCCA logbooks dating back to 1978 when it was first raced, my father purchased it in 1982 and towed it back from NY in a 1976(?) Saab 99 EMS. Has been in my family basically since '82. Somewhere along the line my dad sold the car to a friend of his. At the time of sale the car had only two small dents at the bottom of the drivers door, I will be posting pictures very soon hopefully and you'll see what has happened when it left our hands. The car was last raced in 1995 where a roll pin in the trans broke leaving us with only 3rd and 4th gear, car still finished on the podium.

More about the car itself. Front fender flares are brazed on (talk about old school) rear flares are fiberglass. Wheels are magnesium 15x7 wheels. Front brakes have ventilated rotors adapted from some sort of Chrysler product, rears are all stock. 4-piston front calipers. Dual brake master cylinders, MSS swirl tank for the cooling system, Accu-sump, Brake arrestors mounted for front and rear brakes. 4-2-1 header built by MSS, MSS cam, twin weber DCOE-45 side draft carburators, Stock saab performance catalog rear shocks, adjustable pan hard bar, koni adjustables front (red).

Now for the best part, transmission has Straight cut Saab rally gears with interchangeable ratios (lost all of those when my dads barn burnt down). Can get stock turbo ratios and drawings and whatever Jack from MSS has left, will be buying those as I doubt anyone else has a trans that would acept them. Trans is also equipped with an LSD.

I acquired this car in 2008 and started working on it in 2009 when I lost my job, sat since then, and now that I'm working at the family Saab shop I'll be pulling some longer hours to get it back into race trim and fix the body work. Pictures will be posted soon. Car is not for sale, nor are any of the vintage speed parts. Just want to restore this car and preserve some Saab racing history.

Did you already sand all the old paint off? Was it sanded before? The 99's all had cold-dipped zinc plating on the entire steel shell after it was welded together before it went for paint, if you use a chemical stripper to take the paint off rather than abrasive it leaves the rust-protecting zinc layer intact.

There's some good shots and explanation in this build thread of Luke's on the Rally forum:

• View topic - '75 99 Rally Car Restoration

This door is not painted, that's the bare zinc coating over the bare metal.

I did not know that, i went after it with a wire brush, I had to get through the bondo that it had to see what i was working with, the paint stripper I was using didn't work so well so I got a little over zealous perhaps. Wish I had known that and what stripper would work.

Wow, awesome! I hope you re-do some of the graphics like the very '70s "99"

Those gears that Jack had are for the primary drive gears of a gear-drive transmission (like you have). Most people use the chain drive because they're stronger. I have two friends who have S&R gearsets for the earlier gear-driven primary boxes but you can modify a shaft from a chain-drive box so you can use that gearset in a chain-drive box. You can swap out the chain-drive ratios too, but most of what is available is stock #4, #5, #6, #7 primary ratios. I seem to remember Jack's custom primary gear ratios being shorter than a #4 chain drive set.

Have you checked out the SAABRALLY.COM forums? There are some other 99 & 900 race cars in various states of disrepair. Your car would fit right in

I did check them out, and then I thought, wait I think I'm a member there, and sure enough it turns out I still had my membership there. My last post was in 2008 but it was still there haha. I did talk to Jack not too long ago (on Tuesday I think) and he had some miscellaneous primary gears still there, so I think I will buy those from him and see if he won't sell me the drawings too. Not many people are using the gear drive transmissions so if I get the gears made for me I don't think that would be an issue.

I do plan on recreating as much of the graphics on there as possible, would love to have those numbers painted on the doors again. If not I suppose vinyl would work in a pinch :\
