Any ice racers out there?

I'd love to ice race one up here in New Hampshire. Anyone know of any Saab ice racers up this way? Did take my EMS around the motorcycle ice racing track, second gear only, it was a ball. That was back aound 1979.
Started with a '69 model '99 with the spitfire engine and free wheeling. Been sold on Saabs ever since. Then came a '73 EMS and then another just like it. (Bronze with the black side stripes and honey comb wheels).
They were pretty quick to 110 mph and handled very well. Put a '78 transaxle in the 73, that was interesting because it was the new chain drive down to the tranny (converted it back to gear drive- the front case was smashed on the newer one. Did that cause I launched the spider gear shaft in between the pinion and drive gear! It was like a small atomic explosion- blew the diff cover off.
Moved up to a couple of 900's, then a 9-5 wagon 3.0T for the EX, and now 2 900ng's n/a & turbo. Miss the 99 EMS's I had. Are they still around? The first one sold me on the rest. My mechanical drawing teacher in high school had a model 96 wagon with a bumper sticker that said "Made in Trollhatten by Trolls". Got some pics somewhere..

I know a bunch of ice racers. Zach mentioned a couple of them from the area. If you're looking for a place to run, get ahold of jaffreyiceracing.com if you are in southwest NH.. or ne-iceracing.com which I believe races in Milton, NH

This year I want to get into ice racing. I have 2 cars that are fine candidates, the 1979 99 GL and the 1991 9000-T. I would not be upset if either one were crashed and neither one is in fantastic cosmetic condition, plus they are both getting driven all winter anyway... so it only makes sense!

That's some BIG shoes to fill and I'll be the first to say that I'm not the man. I have very limited time behind the wheel and most of my time is spent under the hoods of the fellow Saab racers at these events. This year will be different but I will be hard-pressed to earn that title. Wish me luck and hope to see a few Saablink.net stickers in the parking lots this year.

There is a guy up in Burlington, Vermont, Milner "Mike" Noble, who used to ice race Saabs back in the day. His stories were fantastic.

Ice Racing

Wow- what a response! I'm in Seabrook and Milton NH is an hour north so that's where I'll go to pick up some tips. Ice raced motorcycles late 70's to early eighties but never Saabs. Thanks TSLr's

Did you know that Saab-Scania of America, Inc. used to provide actual trophies from the company to winners of the ice race on Lake George, New York?

I will get some photos of those trophies..

Yep, I worked at the Stratham autozone for about a month when I lived with my dad in West Newbury, MA (couple exits down from you).

BTW, those stickers are my favorite ever... you can buy some replica/reproductions on eBay sometimes.

My dad actually had a Made in Trollhattan by Trolls T-shirt... bastard used it for his "work shirt".

Claude Hutchings is an old friend of Dave Kennedy, and is very prominent on the ice race scene in NY, I believe they do a lot of racing on Lake George. He has his son Claude Jr. in on it, and he does a lot of the driving, Claude Sr. does the fab and prep. You will find things from Claude Sr. on the IceRace site, and on Saabnet.

The guys on the SaabRally forum might know people ice racing the vintage cars, most of them are in New England, and it seems like they know where pretty much every model 99 in the country is at.

Best,
Drew

The classic 9000 vs C900, Darryl vs ClaudeSr, NewSalem vs TiredIron battle.

This battle lasted for 5 or 6 years and is what forced me into enjoying iceracing. Believe me, it's not ment to be a spectator sport. They both were the kings of the B class until a certain Jackson/Vtec combo let them know it was over.

Totally random but seeing those trollhattan stickers makes me realize i definitely need one to slap on the old race car, i think that would look awesome! Maybe I'll get a patch and sew it on my drivers suit too =P

I cheated. Mine's painted on one of my lexan side windows. I just enlarged the picture on my computer, then printed it out and painted it.

I've done a little ice racing. I ran in the Street Legal Unstudded class with AMEC (icerace.com) once last year. That's a good class to start in but the course can be crowded Some friends of mine run just about every ice race that AMEC puts on in their C900s. I may run my 99 in one of the studded classes this winter just for fun (not looking for any good finishes).

I've been to one of the Jaffrey ice races once a few years ago. There were a number of C900s and 99s running. Its more of a roundy-round full contact race so I didn't want to run my 99 rally car in that.

The Boston region of the BMW Car Club of America runs ice races (open to all makes) in central NH, usually at or around Newfound Lake. http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/EventDe...ce-racing.aspx They're against the clock, one car at a time so you don't need a roll cage and don't have much chance of damaging your car. That's a great place to try out ice racing due to the minimal equipment needed and the fact that there is nobody else that can run into you.
