Garfield: The Sunset Orange '74 99LE

This car has some interesting history. Originally owned by cartoonist Jim Davis, the car has certainly earned it's nickname. Sunset Orange with with the black LE strip package solidifies it. After Davis, it was purchased by a family that is affiliated with Koni Suspensions NA. After being driven by many members of the family, it was retired to a barn in Irving, KY for a few years. The car was later purchased by Per Schroeder of Grassroots Motorsports/Classic Motorsports and used as a short-term project with a bit of magazine and website coverage. I purchased the car from Per a couple of weeks ago. It runs and drives quite well, despite the funky early fuel injection and some type of electrical drain that renders the battery useless after sitting for a couple of days. It's not rusty, and it came with a few really nice parts already installed. Among these is the front lip, purchased years ago from what I was told was a JC Whitney catalog, and the last set of NOS Koni adjustables made for the 99. Since I got it home, the car has sat in my driveway, waiting for warmer weather and roads without salt. I took a few pictures of the car during our trip from KY to FL and back to KY. I sold my '84 RX-7 GSL-SE to another GRM staffer, so we towed it to FL and towed the 99 back. It worked out well.

The rig on the way to FL:

Yes, it is:

Home at last:

Short-term plans are to fix the eletrical drain, convert from points to electronic ignition, replace thermostat, reupholster rear seat, and a few other little things. I hope to bring the car to SOC this year.

very cool car, glad it went to someone thatll take care of it, i'm quite jealous of its lack of rust. did you ever find a marker light for it? i could probably dig one up in the basement here if you havent.

You live in Bullitt Co. so at least I still have the coolest Saab in Louisville!

I can't wait to see it in person, maybe I can stop by this weekend?
