RUST! (pics)

so i was poking around the back end of the EMS last night (literally) checking out some of the rust (rust on a 99?!?! no way! ), heres some pics:

resting in the garage:

crusty old suspension

yeah thats a hole

other side, same place

under the pass side rear mud flap

after poking at it

link to a few more http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...Havranek/rust/

all in all its not as terrible as it looks, doesnt seem to have much structural rust, for this year im gonna be happy with knocking all the big chunks off and POR-15ing em, along with a good coat of rubberized undercoating, the wheel wells all have a big stripe where there is no undercoat at all, its a wonder these cars didnt rust out even worse!

Just thought i'd scare the west coasters a bit hopefully next time i'll have some real progress pictures.

Paul

we fixed a 1990 900 at work that was about the same, probably a bit worse than that. It's not a death sentance!

Guess I'm preaching to the peanut gallery but that rust doesn't look too bad at all. My first 99 was a Fred Flintstone Special Edition.
It was monkeyshit brown, to boot.

I'm surpised 99's rust this bad, because they dipped the entire shell in a tank of anticorrosion stuff at the factory. I have actually never seen, in person, a 99 as rusty as yours paul. I got a whole yard full of ones with NO holes from rust and hardly any surface rust. Will trade for bilsteins.

I think the ones built in Finland were more prone to rust because the Finns fucked something up in the rustproofing process and the ferry ride across the east sea to sweden put a layer of salt spray on the cars so that they were actually rusting from WITHIN during their lives or something to that effect...
Anyways the Finns drink alot and say AIAIAIAIAI during rally crashes so why trust them to do anything correctly.
Can I have half a car for a front set of Bilsteins?

I've always heard that the Belgian-made 99's were the most prone to rust.

And that the 99 turbo's were manufactured differently, and as a result were not so rust-prone.

Those were the Belgian-built 99s you're talking about. They pretty much started rusting from new. A friend of mine has a '76 99 rally car that according to the VIN was made in Belgium. We can't figure out how it's not rusted.

Paul, the rust on your '73 EMS is similar to the rust in my '76 EMS but not as bad, definitely fixable. I ended up scrapping mine. The '73 99L I reluctantly sold recently had no rust in those rear parts but had it up front.
