chillcast 4-spd transmissions

What years did the 'chillcast' 4-spd transmissions get fitted to 99's? Or where they always just a factory option?

Craig.

well its really hard to get that info, from what i can tell it was mostly 78 99t's, but definitely not all of em, cause at least one of the 3 99t's i have, didnt have a chillcast box in it.

You could change the height of the house too, if the weather sucked.

If this thread starts to make sense again, I'm curios in finding out how you determine what tranny is chilcast. like a casting number or something.

i think there is a casting number, but more reliably, the cases physically look different, ill try and dig up some photos.

allright here we go, found this on 900aero.com, they have some good info on there.

these are pics of a chillcast box:

heres one thats not chillcast, this is what the one we pulled out of one of my 99t parts cars looked like.

if you look at the two cases, the chillcast one has more ribbing, and the three ribs in the oilpan area are at an angle rather than straight up and down as on the no chillcast one.

allright some more info from SC

Quote:
1. The cast number is supposed to be 870423 or 871239. Of these numbers there are many casts of different strength. You can say that all these housings are very strong, but if you want the strongest it is the one with 3 diagonal ribs on the forward right corner in the oilpan.

2. How to se if it is a strong cast is to look at the ribs on the right side of the transhousing. They are horisontal. This is the easiest way to be sure.
3. The primary housing should have 3 strengthening ribs under the slave sylinder that is 1cm wide and with a distance of 3cm between each. If it is 3cm wide ribs with 1cm between each it is wrong! You can take a look at the 5speed gearbox to see what it should not look like.
so in the pics above, the top one is the strongest cast, the other one is apparently one of the weakest casts, but still stronger than the 5spd since you have thicker gears to start out with.

dead on, thats my plan for the next box, but starting out with a better case (chillcast 4spd) is always a good thing.

i think the trans oil cooler might be the key to this one...

but then again, i dont know my c900's like you guys do.

but my thought, if you can keep the gears cooler, then maybe the chance of stripping teeth off any gear is less?
