9Kwrecker's 91 9000T.

I made a snap decision and bought a 91 9000T off of Saabnet a few weeks back. Most of you can just skip the novel and go straight for the pics. I'm putting a desc of the trip here so I can remember it later.

I've been looking for a straight/not rusty 91 9000T for a project for a few years now, ever since a highly unfortunate and stupid accident took out my black 92 9000S. I ended up seeing a Saabnet Facebook post for this car, so I guess thanks Saabnet for constantly bombarding my feed with FS posts.

I started talking to the guy and it seemed like it was a solid car and the price was right. He told me I was 2nd in line, there was one other guy that emailed ahead of me. That guy eventually bowed out and I had my chance. The guy wasn't able to get great pics of it, but from the photos he did send I decided I had seen enough to be willing to make the 1600 mile round trip from Cleveland to outside Minneapolis. I was planning to have the car shipped but my friend suggested we take his truck and trailer instead. No idea why he would make that suggestion.

It was a bit of an epic journey. A friend and I both worked our normal days on Friday, and we left for MN around 8 PM. We drove all through the night, and my first driving leg and first ever time pulling a trailer was driving straight through Chicago. Luckily it was the middle of the night and the traffic wasn't terrible.

We reached the storage place where the car was right around 9:30 AM after driving straight through, only stopping for fuel (gasoline and caffeine).

We pulled in and I could see the unit where the car was open already. The car had no battery in it but the seller pulled the battery from his 9-5 to be able to start it up and move it out of the unit. Once it was out in the sunlight I took a couple laps around it and we started loading it up. We did a test fit of our trailer in Cleveland using a 9000 Aero, but somehow this car was just a hair longer. We had to jam the ramp door into the front bumper a little to get it to shut.

Just before we shut the door:

The journey back was pretty much the same thing as the ride out there, with a few exceptions. Most notably, we stopped for food at Newt's in Rochester, MN. If you ever have the chance, it's worth the stop. We parked the truck on my friend's front yard at 3:30 AM Sunday, 33 ish hours after we left.

This is where the good pictures start, when we got it unloaded and pulled into the shop, and I got my first real good look at the car.

Just rolled it out, there was a bit of a welcoming party at my shop:

Up on the lift right away:

Exhaust behind the cat is new:

Lots of new suspension bits, I didn't get great pics, but most of the rubber is new. All of the engine/trans mounts are new poly, and it feels like it when move it around, vibrates a ton:

Pretty clean in the bay for how old it is:

And here's why I got the car cheap:

I've already ordered some samples to recover the headliner, A pillars, C pillars, and door inserts, they're all loose:

But the seats are very nice (all of them are like this, even the driver's), leading me to believe this car didn't spend much time outside:

Came with a hatch full of parts. Everything to put the dash back together, plus more, including lots of new suspension bits, complete gasket kits, etc:

I just had to wash the dust off. I left it running while I washed it and the lifter tick went away.

Awesome.

I wanted to snag that car real bad but wouldn't have had time for the drive or the resto. I'm really glad the car turned out as nice as I imagined it'd be. It will be worth all the effort.

Congratulations.

Were you the guy ahead of me??

Also, yes I was very excited when I put it up on the lift and started looking closer. It's clearly been well cared for, and I believe it spent a lot of its time with the previous owner stored inside not being driven.

My record with Saabs remains perfect. Every one I've ever had has killed a fuel pump, including this 91. Usually it takes longer than 24 hours, not this time. I think there was so little fuel in it for so long that as soon as I ran it (still with little fuel in the tank) I burned it up.

Luckily I found one on the shelf, from a 9-5 I think, and it dropped right in. Which meant I got to take the car up and down the industrial back road my shop is on.

I grinned ear to ear for the whole quarter mile or so and never got out of 2nd gear or into the boost. This thing is gonna be a lot of fun.

Very nice. I was never a fan of the early 9000, or the 9000 in general. But they're growing on me.

Early 9000s go all the way back to the beginning for me, my first car was a 92 9000S. Just about all of my best (worst?) car stories are based around some sort of 9000. My dad taught me how to side-step the clutch in his 96 Aero, for instance.

Haha, funny you thought that was me. It was definitely a struggle to not give that seller a call. I'm trying to resist impulse buys these days; my wife doesn't enjoy learning about car purchases after the fact, regardless of how incredible the deal. This car you rescued tho...that is an incredible deal.

As much as I love the style and character of the classic 900s and appreciate the build quality and comfort of the 9-5, a 1991 9000T will always be one of my favorite SAABs of all time. My first 2 9000s, the tally red 1991 9000T and the black 1992 9000T that followed, gave me so many awesome memories that will stick with me forever. It has the analogue feel and road feedback similar to a C900 but with the power and refinement of a car decades newer.

There was a short period where I was faced with which 9000 to drive; my 380hp 9000 Aero is a helluva good time, but I always admired the looks and enjoyed the driving experience of the stock 1991 9000T more.

I spent about 10 minutes thinking about it after I saw the Saabnet Facebook post and I just went for it. That's usually not my style, normally I think through these kinds of things for a few days.

I'm glad I didn't wait any longer, though. I guess enough people contacted him the first day that he wanted to get his contact info off the internet so he had Saabnet mark it sold after emailing with me about it for a day.

They're hosted on photobucket, which has turned into an over-advertised waste land of a site. Maybe you have an ad blocker or something messing with the links?

Edit: Here's a direct link to the album, if you can stand to deal with the ads:

Funny you say that. In the two weeks between when I made a deal for it and when I went to pick it up I started looking for threads about other cars and I read through your whole build thread. You may have inspired me to eventually try to polish up the lips on these wheels myself. You should update that thread sometime, it's been a while.

I should update it, but it wouldn't be very interesting. It's still sitting under the same cover it was under 2 years ago in the same spot.. I got myself spread over too many projects and just havent had the time to mess with it. Hoping for a 2019 build. Looking forward to seeing your progress! 1991-1992s are the best!

Fair enough, I'll be on the lookout in 2 years.

So doing a little bit of messing around with this thing last night in an effort to get the dash closer to reassembly, I pulled out the cluster. I did that because when I was running the car the other day there were some lights in the cluster working, but not all. After I got the cluster in hand I noticed there were some connectors that weren't plugged in when I was pulling it out.

Dropped the cluster back in, connected the other connectors I noticed weren't connected, and now the panels for the door ajar/idiot light cluster are working. It was the connectors on the sides of the cluster that were disconnected, so that makes sense. Still the right side half of the back-lighting still wasn't working, but the gauges themselves were. I wiggled some bulbs and now everything is working, good news.

The weird part is that now the back-lighting stays on with the headlights off, all of the dashboard does, other switches, ACC, etc. Shut the key off and all the lights go out.

I'm guessing there's a ground somewhere that I bumped or broke when I was messing with the connectors on the cluster.

Ahhhhh so you was the one that got my car, congrats I have wanted another 91 9000 turbo so bad since I lost Big Bertha (my grey on grey 91 9000 turbo with the grey aero wheels, 5 speed) I have been looking for one for about 8 years now and they are all gone (thanks cash for clunkers ) I hadn't been on saabnet in about 3 weeks and I come back to it 4 days ago to see a 91 with sold stamped across it, I almost cried. I guess it was okay because that same day I found an 07 9-5T for $1500 on Craigslist with no problems besides no sound from radio and gas gauge not reading right that I went and got yesterday. I joined just to comment on this when I saw it. Congrats again and I'm glad it's getting the love it deserves. I'm still upset you got my car though
