Intermittent start

Good day ladies and gents
My 9-5 estate starts intermittently. Sometimes perfectly and sometimes will just turn over with no sign of trying to catch. I suspect the theft siren batteries so removed them but they seem strong. I've tested them using a voltmeter. I will still replace the batteries but i'm not convinced that this is the problem. Crank sensor was replaced recently as well as the DIC, so not suspecting those yet. Also checked vacuum hoses. Any other things I should be checking?

Thanks
Tim

Good day. Siren batteries will make your alarm go off but the car should still start/drive even while the alarm is still active.

I think CPS dominant failure mode is that they usually fail to work correctly when the engine's hot and sometimes work again when the engine cools down again, or not. DIC's dominant mode is that they usually fail when the engine is running and create a no run situation, sometimes they throw a code first.

What about fuel pump? If you turn the key all the way towards 'start' but stop before the engine starter engages, you should be able to hear the pump softly whirling. Sometimes fuel pump motors (all motors for that matter) begin the path to total failure by showing a hard time starting rotation, like they can't overcome the static friction. A test for that is when guys 'bang on the tank' which bumps the motor a little and helps it start. Repeat multiple starts can also help bump the rotation a little which can help it start.

How many miles are on this fuel pump?
