Bye, Bye heat soak.

I've be playing around with the front bumper off the black "parts car" I have.
I cut the guts out of it and installed alloy side panels.
I also spray painted it "stealth" flat black. I'm not sure if I like it or not tho. I'll probably spray it it red again

Let me know what you think .

looks well contructed...paint it red

rarelibra 09-30-2012 05:52 AM

Looks interesting - but any road debris/rocks are going to love your I/C.

mr.jenkins 09-30-2012 07:03 AM

Yeah, I agree looks well done and pretty cool. Maybe paint it read and put some expanded metal over it to stop rocks and stuff from beating up your intercooler.

srp 09-30-2012 07:10 AM

Do you drive it on the road? I'd put the crash bar back...

that cant be legal... anywhere.

and x2 on something to stop crap from hitting your intercooler

Cark 09-30-2012 08:51 AM

yeah... and people try and talk me into pulling the front bumper off my 85. I know it looks cool, but I don't have enough trust in other drivers.

mike d 09-30-2012 04:14 PM

that looks sick,,

1995BlueBeast 09-30-2012 04:43 PM

Looks awesome and the air will be forced over the IC nicely. I agree with others though that the crash bar should be incorporated into the bumper.

bogan 09-30-2012 06:18 PM

Thanks for the reply's guys,

Yeah, I'll paint it red next weekend I think. Black looks a bit ricey.

It's actually quite solid still, The top of the alloy rail is still in place and all the Styrofoam is in the sides still. It would still be somewhat functional as a crash bar

If rocks hit the IC and mess it well I'll just but another IC. These E-bay units are cheap as chips.

And if its legal or not, I dont really care. If I need too, I'll put my other standard bar back on.

just an FYI you have no idea how solid or not solid it is until you hit something or something hits you. and deciding at that point to add it back in will be too late as the whole car including engine woul probably be totaled. bumpers and actual safety parts are things i dont ever mess with. everything else is fair game.

it does look sick... but totally unsafe.

mvadenais 10-01-2012 04:51 AM

keep it, but paint match it. Looks mean and well done. Nice work down under.

Uhhhh no. If only the top edge of the crash bar is left, you've reduced the strength of it to 0, which will greatly compromise the car in a front or offset front impact.

Its not a matter of legality, more of saving your own ass.
If I get some free time, I could have a FEA run on the bar with and without the cutout.

Nice to see something a bit different although I would have probably hidden it a bit more myself as I prefer the stealth look, I too have no heat soak problems...

If you guys think this is unsafe, you ain't seen nothing.

I'm sorry, I was trying to read your statement about a hidden intercooler, but the bright, laser red viggen kept distracting me. lol :th_SmlyROFL:

snowsaab 10-03-2012 07:18 PM

Crazy ass Aussie indeed.

lol i like it. its different, nothing ive ever seen. i agree on paint matching it, and maybe getting some mesh in front of it, why not keep it nice for at least a little while anyway?
if you want to drive it with an unsafe bumper, so be it...fuck what anybody else cares. ;)

hat tip; for creativity and having some balls:th_dblthumb2:

upstateViggen 10-03-2012 08:36 PM

Very creative set up! I like the looks of it.

I was happy that I was able to fill up my bumper opening with mine
