2006 9-3 aftermarket stereo install

Hello all.

I just bought a 2006 9-3 and noticed the stereo system is terrible. I just bought a Clarion NX501 online today and found out that there are no aftermarket wiring harnesses available for model years 03-06 due to the fiber optic cable. Does anyone know of a harness that is adaptable to these cars or can someone steer me in the direction of how to go about installing this head unit without losing my SID? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
TJ

please post if you have found a solution to this, as I am in the same situation.

A couple of months ago my single disc player shit the bed (wont take or eject cd). I had an old head unit from a previous car that i figured I could just pop in and go...NO WAY

After extensive research online, I found some info about removing the player, which I just did this morning and It was actually VERY easy. Only used a flathead screwdriver and a thin towel.

I had recently purchased what was supposed to be a wiring harness for the 93ss, of course, that's what I get for buying something on ebay.

When I unplugged everything from the disc player and radio unit, the wires and plugs were unbelievably different from the harness I have. Not to mention there was nowhere to plug the fiber optic cables that go to the disc player.

I had read online that the fiber optic "loop" needed to be complete for the car to start, this was not true. The car started with everything unplugged, although, when i plugged the radio connections back in, the radio would not work. Come to find out, the fiber optics that go to the disc player needed to be plugged in as well for the radio to work. (weird)

So as of now I am still stuck without a disc player, and I am left to scour the internet to find a way to bypass the fiber optics.

I did have one thought about it though... seeing as the disc player is shot, my idea is to
1. remove just the circuit board that the fiber optics plug into and trash everything else.
2. plug the fiber optics connecter in and basically "trick" the system into believing the cd player is there (so the radio works)
3. Install the new head unit (really just need it for cd player) by wiring into the wires that go to the radio unit, (would only need power and speakers right?)
Tuck the circuit board (with fiber optics plugged in) behind everything and reassemble dash.

My only concern is what wires do what, The plug for the radio unit has some wires that are the same color, and I do not have a diagram of what wire is for what. I will look around online to see what I can find, but my outlook is bleak.

I would appreciate any feedback on any of this please!

I guess a positive thing to look at is at least it doesn't take hours to remove the unit itself, ten minutes tops, Saabs really are put together logically.

As far as i know, you CAN purchase a wiring kit for it, from this website. But there is NO dash kits to hold the single din radio. Which is a real bummer. I dont understand why nobody has manufactured them.....aftermarket stereos in these cars just dont really happen unless you've got some creative skills.

Heres a link to the website: http://incartec.co.uk/saab/1401/1033...o/Browser.aspx

Link doesn't work Bryan. However I too have seen them. We just never replaced the stereo in ours.

I'm pretty sure anything you buy you'll have to get overseas. Probably from England.

Works for me? lol

I just dont get why they havent made dash kits. Wiring harnesses but no dash kits....whats the point if one defeats the others purpose? Thats actually alot of the reason why i havent bought a 04+ 9-3....cant do anything with the stereo. I gotta have my music sound good..

I'm not sure if that is even the proper wiring harness. You'll need to run new wiring to each speaker with exception to the 3.5 speakers in the dash and 4.5s in the rear. The rest come from the amps located in the car which are tied via fiber.

My plan is to run the two on the dash and the two small ones on the rear shelf off the head unit and get a 4 channel amp to run the 6.5s in the doors and 6X9s on the rear shelf.

I think it would look ok IF the person doing the work was #1 Good with fiberglassing things and fabing things from fiberglass... #2 good at painting things... Personally I'm not good at either so I wouldn't take on that project.

Obviously I would do it to a better standard than that one was done.

I really enjoy doing fiberglass and finish work. I shaved the radio bezel on my old explorer and glassed in a gauge pod (not a finished picture at this point).
