I've done this job a second time on aireeca's car, both her car and mine still have more then .8m I believe.

It shouldn't matter if you do it with the weight of the car on the suspension or not.

So if the amount of play is more than .8mm, which equals about 1/32 of an inch, right after replacing the bushing... just how much play warrants doing this repair in the first place?

I haven't looked into the diff bushing much, but after buying a brand new set of wheels and still having a little bit of vibration at around 60mph, I'm starting to think this is it. How long did this take you and is there anywhere that sells assembled axles? I find it hard to believe that just one side costs over $550.

I can do the job in around 2 hours. Probably less if I was really cooking.

Is it just me or does this have the same symptoms as a busted companion flange/bearing? Please let me know the difference if it exists. I guess I'm just going to get under the car and try to move things searching for play.

Post Radial play on inner axle, driver's side

I see I'm 10 years late in replying with a question/suggestion. I see optional thickness adjusting washers available which go inside the bearing/seal retainer plate. I would guess that the various thicknesses would be to adjust the tightness of the tapered roller bearing which should remove some of the radial play from the axle if adjusted correctly.(??) Found same "excessive" movement on my low mileage (80,000 mi.) 2000 when diagnosing front end vibration during accel/decel.
