Looks like sludge

well i took the valve cover off today to paint it and what not, but when i removed the cover i found something that everyone dreads, sludge, or at least thats what i think it is. it looks like this, but now what do i do, what are the step to get rid of this or is it not even that bad? that car has 113,xxx miles on it.

Yes, that is sludge.

Edit: Looks like a ng900! Interesting...
What PCV System on the car? edit: nevermind, this does not apply
What trans? my guess is 5 speed manual, huh?
What oil change intervals since you owned it?
What oil do you use?
How do you drive the car? Long distance average trips (like 15 miles or more) or short distances?
What, if any, history do you have on prior maintenance?

First thing I would do is an oil pressure test to see where you are at with that issue.

From there...? You need to have the pressure tested and then probably stop driving the car until a solution is decided upon.

Oh that is scary to see. Guess I may pull my valve cover when the weather is nice.

Yeah, it looks like that car has - at some point in time - suffered through a few 10,000+ oil change intervals or something crazy like that.

Like the guy on SC who was bitching about the sludge still being an issue...then he goes and says he has a few 12,000 mile oil change intervals since the last time the motor sludged over. :headdesk:

I call that "owner sabatoge".

How could someone go about removing that sludge?

Could you just clean it out?

I imagine some oil passages would be clogged, and you would need to clean out the oil pan too.

Would that Amsoil engine flush do anything?

i change my oil as close to 3k miles as i can. yes it is a 5 speed. for oil i use castrol syntec 10w-40. i think it is kinda hard for me to say about the long and short distances. i think i would average out or lean more towards the short side.

what will the pressure test reveal?

The real question is this: Does it TASTE like sludge?

Looks like sludge + tastes like sludge == it's probably sludge.

Just kidding.

Please don't lick the chocolate syrup.

Out of curiosity, and mostly because I'm just unsure, at what mileage range does sludge generally become a problem?

I can be any mileage, really.

My friend had a new motor put in his 02 SE with 40k on it.

In this case, even following the recommended oil change interval did no good. It was just a flawed design, and bad info in the owners manual.

Well you could clean out the top and clean out the pan, run a few loads of flush, and pray...

It was under warranty, but it would have been about 6800 bucks or something.

They tried to bone him him too, as far as the warranty went. He had the car inspected before he bought it. It had a "bad head gaskest". They fixed it.

Then the oil light comes on, and he takes it back to the same dealer.

The dealer says that "they don't check for sludge" for a pre-owned car. Then he asks if they maybe looked at it when they did the headgasket. They did not pull the head to do the headgasket (impossible).

When he found out that the dealer charged Saab USA for a full headgasket job, when they just smeared some gasked maker on the block, he told the dealer that someone may have an issue with that

...and then 2 weeks later he had a new motor.

Anyway.

I would start cleaning if I was you.

Take your head off and have it hot-tanked, i just did this to a sludged motor and the head came out looking like new. Do the oil pan too!

I've got a 2000 9-3 that we've removed the pan and cleaned. A friend of mine who owns a service station swears by the Justic Bros. engine oil flush kit. I have one here we are going to try in the same car we cleaned the pan on shortly. I will keep you posted with the results.
