ignition switch problem?

car is a 99 9-3. Went to leave the service station last night and put key into ignition. Turn key and get no power, key has no "resistence" in the lock cylinder. The key just moves like it is not actuating anything, like how it would feel if you had the lock cylinder in your hand and turning the key. The key does take the car out of park but thats it. When I move it to the "start" position, I feel no resistance and the key doesnt spring back. everything was fine when I went into the store and I didnt feel anything weird when I pulled the key out. Does this sound like a broken lock cylinder or ignition switch? battery is good and interior lights come on when I open the doors. Im just not getting any power from inserting the key into the ignition.

I'd say before you go replacing the lock cylinder, check the starter relay to see if
1: make sure you're getting voltage to it
2: if it's engaging

If it's doing both of those and still not starting, then it's the actual starter that's the problem.
If it's not doing either (it shouldn't be just #1), then it's something with the lock cylinder or switch or maybe even the twice system.
If it's only doing #2 then it's the relay.

But based on the fact that it's not springing back, it's probably ignition switch related.

fixed it. Turns out there is a little (flimsy) cast aluminum tab that turns the ignition switch when the key is turned. This tab is cast into the shift housing and broke off. found it when I pulled center console out. had to swap entire aluminum housing from a donor car to fix it. ignition switch was fine. thanks for the help!
