steering column

hey guys i recently picked up a 97 900se 5 speed and the only thing ive noticed wrong with it is the steering wheel slides in and out about a quarter inch possibly a bit more which leads me to believe its the steering column? i was wondering if it just needs adjusting or a whole new column any input would be awesome as i know close to nothing about steering systems. car steers and drives fine just makes a clunk when going over big bumps which i think is the column moving

thanks
jeff

Did you try locking the column using the lever underneath the column?

Make sure the pinch bolt on the splined coupling for the column isn't loose. If it comes disconnected while driving it will be extremely dangerous.

steering wheel is off... the spline where the steering wheel is mounted is the part that has play so perhaps a new steering column? the spacer with individual prongs right at the end of the shaft seems worn and not sitting correctly perhaps that spacer is supposed to keep the shaft from moving? any help appreciated
