Couple issues with my new 9-5

Hello everyone... this is my first comment/post/thread so hi... looks like there are quite a lot of knowledgable people here and I look forward to chatting with everyone.

So I picked up me new 2010 9-5 yesterday and I do have a couple questions/concerns.

1. The manual, GM press releases and my dealer insist that my car has passive entry however I do not see it in the Config menu. I also do not see the sensor on the driver door handle as the manual shows.

2. The HUD display quite often hits the sun in a way that sends a disabling death ray at me... almost like I'm looking at the sun. Is there is fix for this besides covering the entire unit with a piece of material?

3. Last but not least is the biggest concern of mine. Any sort of light (headlights, stop lights, LED lights on cars like Audi and Porsche) come through the windshield "doubled." In other words at a stop light for example it looks like there are two red lights stacked on top of each other. The strip of LED's on a new Audi looks like there are two strips.

This problem seems to run in the windshield in horizontal strips that run across the entire length of the window. So if a light comes in double it will go away if I sit up a couple more inches or down a couple more inches. There are 3 or 4 strips like this that cause the doubling effect. I honestly can't see myself driving the car like this at all and need to figure this out asap.

Any help with these would be truly appreciated! Thanks

I don't know much about the new 9-5's, but the windscreen should not be like that at all. I don't know how they would let it out of the factory like that, but I would take it back to the dealer and say I want a replacement if it bad enough to cause a safety concern.

1. Just walk up to your locked 9-5 with your key on you and pull open the door handle. Passive Entry-done

2. HUD has a dimmer dial to make the Display brighter or dimmer. HUD-done

3. Agree with AutoXer. I have not seen this problem before or have any complaints on this. Go back to your Dealer and take the Service Manager/Advisor out for a ride so they can document this. Do this

Hope this helps.

There was a service bulletin I read from GM about the 'doubled' lights in the windscreen, although it was directed towards the HUD image on Chevy trucks and Corvettes being doubled. The HUD windscreens have a special polarized film applied - the double reflection is caused by the light reflecting off the inside and outside surfaces of the glass, and the film is supposed to counteract this.

The bulletin asserted that some HUD cars had left the factory with non-HUD windscreens fitted, I would get it to the dealer and show a tech exactly what you are talking about.

The only HUD 9-5 I drove was during the day, so I can't say I noticed it myself.

Definitely bring it up at the dealer though, it shouldn't be doing that.

dont' mean to be a smart ass but in the meantime just move the seat up or down so you don't see double anymore

I don't have any of the issues you are having so I can't help much.

However I do know that the 2010 cars don't have the door sensors, the first run of aeros didn't have them, most likely for supply issue reasons like the sunroof.

Well the double vision occurs across the entire windshield in three "rows" that go horizontally. It is not just where the HUD display is. The sales manager took a look and said that he's never seen such a thing before and that this is definitely defective. I then talked to a salesman who told me he's had dozens of people complain about what I described. He told me he called Saab and they told him to tell the customer to adjust their seat. Since the issue is across the entire windshield in multiple "rows" moving the seat doesn't help.

A few days ago I test drove a 2011 with the HUD and it also had this symptom however wasn't as severe as mine is. The dealer has agreed to order me a new windshield but I'm not sure if I should go with an exact replacement or go with the windshield made for cars without the HUD. I'm willing to lose that feature as long as I get a clear view through it.

The dealer and corporate Saab also acknowledged the HUD glare issue but said at this time there is no fix for it. I even read an article in a car magazine that recommended against getting this feature because the glare was so bad and distracting.

A new problem developed yesterday. Every so often the mileage on the center color screen will flash off and then right back on again. Only the mileage goes off... The rest of the screen remains fine. Any idea what would make this happen?

Thanks guys!

Anyone know if it's possible to program the car to use the LED "brow" for daytime lights instead of the ugly and old looking yellow lights? If not I may buy some PIAA H8's in the hyper white color.

Anyone replace the 6418 licensed plate bulb with LED one's? I'm surprised they haven't switched to these already. I'm not sure if I need to get the ones with the built-in voltage converter... So I don't get error messages.

Any experience with these would be appreciated. Thanks!

On the 9-3SS you can do both of those, no idea on the NG9-5, sorry. I don't even have the equipment at work to investigate if an NG9-5 came in, they don't use the Tech2 for programming and fault tracing, GM moved to a laptop based system called GDS that the new 9-5's use as well.

If you try LED lic. plate bulbs you could always order both and see if the 'regular' ones work, if they do you can return the 'error-cancelling' ones with the circuitry to trick the computers.

If your getting a glare off of the HUD itself u should try sitting lower, I can barely see the housing let alone anything down in there, occasionally the moon will sort of reflect off of it and into the windshield but its minor... Also I posted a reply about the door thing above in case u didn't see it. The manual lists the feature so I guess they originally planned on having it in the 2010 cars

I've also decided to upgrade to the 20" rims and since they are quite expensive I'd like to sell my facory 19" Turbine wheels. They are brand new and just hit 500 miles today. There is not a mark on any of them. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

Please put up a post in the for sale section with location/price and pictures - someone here I'd imagine would snatch those up for a good price.

So... I tried the USB connection for my iPod for the first time. After just a few minutes the music started cutting in and out and was followed by a very annoying "static" sound. I changed the USB cable and tried another iPod and had the same issue.

The mileage display which is located on the center of the speedometer randomly flashes on and off. The rest of the color screen is ok though.

This morning that same information color screen displayed a malfunction that read "Headlamp leveling malfunction. Visit service center." it went off and on 3 times.

Not too long after that my check engine light went on!!!!

I immediately took the car back to the dealer. I've now owned my brand new Saab a total of 11 days and it has been at the dealer a total of 5 of those days!

Not sure what else to say... When I talked to my Saab rep. she told me we have to "exhaust all options" before she considers a buy back. Good grief.

The windscreen glare is a known issue. I don't know what their suggested fix is. I would probably ask for a new windscreen.

Hard to sort any issues on these as us indy techs will not be getting our hands on them until they come out of warranty. The dealer is pretty much your only option, and I'd say even the techs there are still learning.

Yeah everything thats been done has been a first for techs at my dealership. They had not previously touched a new 9-5 other than PDI's when they show up on the lot.

Less than a year old. The dealer was "unable to duplicate it." The service rep. Told me to just videotape issue I have while they're happening if possible because this would help them to diagnose the issues. I've had my new car for 13 days and it's been at the dealer for 7 of them!

So I took my car in Tuesday afternoon for a check engine light, loose center console panel and a malfunction light in the center color info. screen. That error read "Headlamp leveling malfunction. See service center." I had a couple other issues... But back to the 3 I mentioned here. I picked up the car yesterday. The dealer fixed the center console panel. They told me the engine light was on due to a code for a leak in the evaporator system. They claim to have run a test on the system 5 times and could not find a leak so they simply erased the error code. They also told me that they could not find a code for the headlamp error. I picked up the car yesterday.

Just a couple hours after picking up my car yesterday... It was around 6-7 so it was getting dark. All of a sudden the headlamp malfunction light came back on for 10 seconds or so. It went away. I was sitting at a stoplight behind an SUV. Out of no where both of my headlights started to literally bounce up and down together rather fast. (Imaging the words coming out of my mouth.) after heading back towards my house I got pulled over by a state cop. He asked me why I was "flashing my brights" at everyone! I told him the situation with my new car. He asked that I tow the car and I explained to him that I love close by and that I would take the car in to the dealer Thursday morning. I did just that.

Best of all??? I videotaped my car's headlights "freaking out" while I was at the stoplight so the dealer has no excuse for not fixing them this time because they could not figure out the problem.

I've owned my new 9-5 for 13 days and it's been at the dealer for 7 of them. Tomorrow will make it 8 for 14. I've been working with a district specialist from Saab. I've clearly expressed the fact that I don't feel safe in this car any more and that i would like to get into another new 9-5. She keeps telling me "I understand your frustration but we need to exhaust our options first." Whatever that means. She says the EXACT same thing every time. Talk about bad PR. I'm willing to stay with the brand and they want me to go through this.

My car had 105 miles on it when I bought it. It now has 740 miles on it. Somewhere between 210 and 230 of them are from driving the car to and from the dealer and from the dealer "test driving" the car. Come on Saab! I'm willing to give you another chance! Take back this lemon... Please!
