S&S:
They're in Warrenton, Va., but have loaners. Never used them but know people who did and liked them.

Swedish Motor Cars: Falls Church, I believe. Again, never used them. They do nice work. It can get pricey, though.

Danneman Auto: Laurel, Maryland, right near a MARC station. Never used them.

DC area members on Saablink include: JackStraw, TweeksTurbo, Oliversexpedition, Talledega900, Blaque, Rudedog and some others I can't think of right now. You might try dropping them PMs, as well. I know JackStraw, Tweek and Oliversexpedition have had their fair share of c900s.
These are all fine choices. I would call Viking for the most affordable/ cost effective trans swap. I would contact Frank (Olivers Expedition) or Tweek and see if they have a line on a decent used tranny.

Also, add DeLorean to that list for sourcing used trannies. He's up in northeast Pennsylvania but spends a large part of the week roaming around the Philly area junkyards.

That's right. I just spoke with DeLorean on another matter. I don't know why I didn't think of him as a parts source. His prices are very reasonable for used parts. He is also very knowledgeable.

Thanks guys.
I am feeling more inspired to fix this car. How reliable are used transmissions? And if I do find the right mechanic, someone with a passion for Saabs then I will probably fix all her other problems too, including the AC. The mechanics that have worked on her in the past have always had the attitude that it's too much trouble and expense to fix all the little problems.

It's because you are a girl.

I am surprised no one has asked for your hand in marriage, yet.

Namely, myself.

Good luck on the fix.

Viking Automotive of Gaithersburg is Da Bomb for reliable and reasonable independent service.

No. She is from DC and that is where we are located and what we are familiar with.

If you don't know about eeuroparts.com already, you should do some investigating there for some of the little nagging things. Shipping is free on orders more than $49 and it's very fast on the East Coast.

Actually, as one of the other females who post up here, I'd actually say it is because you have a really nice Saab and really nice Saabs are worth saving.

You'll get used to Topher; we've all had to. He's more or less the little brother you never wanted.

But the reason, you don't want him as a little brother is because he is funnier. Smarter. More successful. Has impeccable taste in denim. And in general is more well loved than the older siblings, due to the sense of overwhelming pride he brings to his parents.

Rudedog, if you need another explanation, the above is considered sarcasm. Luckily, the new member was able to pick up on that.

No prob. You probably won't catch Eric and his crew at Viking tomorrow unless they've changed their hours. They used to be closed Mondays (but they have Saturday hours), but I think you can leave a message.

I just checked their website and they are in fact closed on Monday.
I hope the mechanic that has my car wont mind me transferring it elsewhere. He has been kind enough to keep it for the past week without pressuring me to make a decision.

I've only had to do this once - back in my VW days - and I basically updated the shop where the car was that I hadn't forgotten about the car, did my homework and then told them of my decision when it was final.

Also, it's likely that if the mechanic was telling you not to fix it, he's going to be relieved that it is someone else's issue.

Worst case scenario? If you get the car to Viking (or whichever shop you choose) and decide to NOT fix it, that will be a good place for others who might want to buy it and fix it to come see it.

Good luck and keep us posted!

used transmissions can be somewhat tricky. You can get a good used one that will be totally functional and be fine for over 100K miles, but you can get a lemon that won't work & be shot right from when it's installed... If you really like the car do what others have suggested & call around to some proper independent saab specialists and see what they can do for you. If you can afford it, take it to the best saab shop you can, and say "fix it", and that car should be able to go as far as it's already gone again, maybe more.

No spare transmissions at the moment, I do have a complete car for less then they want to put a used transmission in, but that's a different story. $2000 is a fair price to put a used transmission (in the local DC area), I've been quoted up to $3200 for a used one installed.

I just got another request for a transmission last week, looks like we need to start repairing the C900 transmissions
