flywheel seal

Replaced flywheel seal with bolts and washers inching it in, but I am curious whether the spring holding lips against flywheel spindle has a habit of springing off if one does not, as I did not, use the Saab flywheel seal application tool? I suppose if it leaks then I have not done the deed correctly. I have of course seen u-tube videos using a sleeve of plastic to keep lips apart, thus obviating the problem of losing the wire retainer. Thanks. Again, my questions come from not having any background in the Saab world...
