(Different) Shudder Issue

Yet another ghost chase by yours truly. 01' Aero Wagon, 181k, Manual.

I've replaced all engine mounts, gearbox mount, and the fuel filter. I've flushed the transmission. Full synthetic every 3k since ownership.

When my foot is off the gas the car will lerch and shudder for 2 seconds. Same thing when gas is applied (if I don't shift with precision of a brain surgeon..)

Do I just suck at driving, or is the gearbox chatter from my last thread somehow related? I plan on owning this car for another few years and just want it to drive like the Swedes intended..

Does this happen regardless of gear or speed ? Check tierod ends and the rest of your front end suspension.. Both acceleration and deceleration will cause shudder if your front end suspension isn't quite up to snuff. At 181k some things should need replacement by now if they haven't been... Otherwise check your clutch if its been awhile

Yes, this happens regardless of speed or gear.

Thanks for the input. I'll give the suspension inspection a go. When checking the end links and suspension parts, am I looking for worn bushings? The car handles pretty tight, but it is a bumpy ride.. I just attributed that to the bilsteins...

Also, how goes one check the clutch?

Stick a jack in middle jackpoint between the wheels and get both tires off the ground and give it gas and let it off like you normally do when this happens..."Feel" and listen for any strangeness.... If you don't notice anything strange than the issue is likely suspension related.. With the wheels off after and still in the air move the rotors side to side and look for any play in any point everything should be firm

Use a mallet if needed to bang on any bushings/joints hands may not be strong enough... There is 3k lbs of steel pushing and pulling on them on the rd

As far as the clutch goes if you know its been a significant amt of miles since its been serviced its likely the flywheel needs machining.. If the suspension checks out the clutch is the most likely culprit since you already replaced motor mounts.. I'm just assuming it only happens while the clutch is engaged... Have you noticed anythingif push the clutch in and tap the brake? If it was suspension there should be some shudder when not in gear when you tap the brakes gently though probably not as noticeable while in gear as the wheels wouldn't be tugging at the suspension while decellerating

Not yet, was slapping my buddies '88 Yamaha back together this weekend and didn't have an opportunity to check the Saab. I'll be checking it out tonight however, so I'll let you know the results. Thanks again for the pointers.

I had the car on jack stands last night, wheels spinning as to pin point the shudder issue. When the foot was off the gas, it wouldn't occur so I can rule out the clutch as being the culprit. (The steering wheel wasn't pulling either.) Has to be suspension related.

Also gave the wheels a good jerk; joints were nice and firm. All rubber booties looked good as well. Tie rods looked fine.

However, in another thread I was trying to figure out my grinding sound whilst in 2nd gear, convinced that it was gearbox related and that my clutch was dying. The sound I was hearing appears to be the universal joint. (My dad swears by it..) It was coming from the driver side wheel area. Bad bearings would sound much worse and I'd hear it taking sharp corners which isn't the case.

Not sure how difficult that is to replace, or whether it just needs some grease.

On a side note, I took my buddies 08' 9-3 out for a spin (it's a 6-speed manual). When mimicking the same behavior (giving gas then taking my foot off) that familiar shudder occurred, albeit ever so slightly...

Univeersal joint? The car is front wheel drive the axles connect directly into the transaxle there is no u joint.. The only issue driveline wise outside the trans would be a cv joint if that's what you meant by bearing and yes that would click extremely noticably on sharp turns...if a wheel bearing was bad enough it would sound like grinding but at that point it would be very evident that was the issue and it would make noise whether in any gear or not.

Anyway to youtube something to hear the sound if you hold a phone outside the window?

You mention 2nd gear but said the issue happens regardless of speed or gear. Does the shudder happen if you push the clutch in instead of letting off the gas? Is there only a grinding sound sound in second but a shudder in any?

If there's a shudder in any gear while engaged but no grinding noise I'd still say flywheel and if there's really only noise in 2nd but no other gear I'd say you have some bad teeth or something on 2nd.. Its typically pretty stressed if you drive a particular way I know I tend to beat up mine the worst in 2nd

A suggestion, there are a ton of TSL and Saab guys in NH/MA area, might want to enlist someone else to drive it or check it out?
