Car smells like gas after filling up

Topped off the 9-5 last night and for a good 20 minutes after I filled up, there was a strong gas odor. It actually started giving me a headache until I rolled down the window.

Then this morning when I opened the sun roof on my way to work there was a slight/faint odor of gas.

What could be the cause and how do I resolve this?

I think it's gas.

Ahhhh....good times.

Find out whether the smell is stronger in the front or the rear of the car. If it's in the front, look for a screwy routing of the tank return lines, but if it's in the back, then it might be a loose seal on the tank, or a leaking overflow line that's dripping onto the tank itself. It might have pooled right on the top....

I figured it out. While I was vacuuming out the car, when I went to vacuum under the rear seat, the cover over the fuel pump was loose, and there was a good 1/2" gap wide open...

There probably is a little bit of gas pooling on top/leaking from the overflow, and when I had the sunroof cracked, it created a draft that drew air in through the hole under the rear seat right above the fuel pump.

Now that the cover is firmly sealed in place (took me about 5minutes of fiddling with it to get the rubber to seal properly all around the cover), no more gas smell inside the car.... except for when I stop at white castle!

Even with that cover loose, you should not be smelling gas.
Fix that leak.
