Unhappy '99 9-5 Cranks and Cranks but wont start (replaced CPS)

1999 Saab 9-5 4cyl.

Issues started about 12 days ago where the car cranked and cranked after a 25 minute drive. It did eventually turn on after trying.

However, after two more times doing this it entirely gave up (still cranked and cranked, never powered up though). Came out the next morning and it started just fine. This happened for a few days.

The rev counter would shutter and bounce around during the cranking. I replaced the crank position sensor today hoping it was the problem. However, no dice. It still cranks and cranks.

I do hear the fuel pump priming (though my indie mech is going to take a look tomorrow).

Thoughts on what it may be? DI??

Also, maybe related. Sometimes after heavy driving or long trips with the AC on as I slow down (under 25mph) or to a stop it will stall. It turns on right away just fine.

Some other details that may be worth knowing - replaced the engine 6 months ago (new one has 60k on it, included di, turbo, etc). Though since replacing the engine the CEL blinks occasionally. It's always on, always has be since i bought the car 3 years ago. Just after the engine replacement it sometimes blinks. I don't know what codes it's throwing out though.

One last thing that might help -- sometime I get a message saying to tighten fuel cap when idle.

Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the reply!

DI is hopefully being shipped monday -- will know if it works mid week.

I'm starting to think more and more it could be fuel pump...Not for any reason other than I just bought the DI (I guess good to have a spare if it isn't the culprit).

Does the DI cassette typically have the hot starting issue? I was able to drive it after the first time i noticed this. I just had to let it sit for an evening. This worked for about a week.

Well you could easily know by taking the access cover off the fuel pump, you can here the pump prime with key on engine off.

blinking cel is a random missfire iirc.... so both di and fuel pump could do it

I'm having an extremely similar issue with my sister's 9-5. The fuel pump and the fuel filter were both replaced on Sunday. Car started up fine. Drove all the way from WVU to Pittsburgh with no issue. Stopped for some food, got back in, car started, revs bounced a little and died. Next attempt to start it fired right up. Since then it's been driven several times with no issue until this morning. I start it up, revs bounce and it stalls out. rinse, repeat. Cannot get it to run at all.

Suggestions? I'm hearing CPS and DIC. Anything else I should look into, test?

Did you get an OEM DIC. If not you need to send the one you have back and get an OEM unit. Once that is done you will know if your problem is the DIC. I know that is an expensive 1st step, but without it and no codes (I am assuming here) that is pretty much a must.
Did you pull the old O ring out of the CPS that you replaced?
Like many you fail to mention where you are so buying suggestions would be a problem.

Are you checking the fuel pressure at the rail, or just listening for the pump?

And (and I know this sounds stupid) but was this a new OEM DIC, or a used one?

You're soliciting an answer from a user who last posted three years ago.

Good luck with your problem...

If the tach isn't bouncing, your CPS is not working.
You sure you have the right one?
You sure the o2 plugs and CPS plugs didn't get switched?
Do you have a multi-meter?
Can you check the resistance of the CPS?
Did you test for spark?
Did you test for fuel?
Is the MAF plugged in?
Battery fully charged?

Give as much detail as possible. What were you doing when it happened? What else have you tried?

just so we can make sure we are clear,

you purchased a brand new OEM DI? because if you did not the problem is mostly likely the DI. The non OEM ones suck and used ones can fail without warning. and seeing as those are what provide spark its a good chance it is that.

Also what CEL code is the car throwing? this will tell you exactly what the problem is.

other wise i advise you to leave the car where it is tell us the address and let one of us come up and buy it for $5 and then fix it using what we've recommended then sell it back to you for way more than that.
