hmm noise
I have an 02 9-5 aero with a 5 speed that makes a hmm noise in the front end under load. If the load is right on acceleration, I can prolong it as long as I desire and it just makes a subtle persistent hmm. On deceleration, it will do it very briefly as the car slows down especially under high RPM downshifts. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this? It appears to be related to the tranny, I think. I have never done any sort of maintenance on the tranny as it is a manual.
Thanks in advance. |

not sure what your problem is, but we just had our 150K 9-5 tranny fluid serviced. the old fluid was black. the previous owner must not have liked preventative maintanance. Now it shifts like new!
I would consider that no matter what your probem ends up being if you haven't ever done it.

I had a similar problem. It turns out it was one of my pulley. I had to replace both belt and pulley. |

i'll try to figure out if it is a pulley or not. I did consider that and I've already done the belt. The oil in a manual tranny gets changed? Automatic, sure but, manual.... Any other ideas would be great.

yes, Why wouldn't you service the fluid in the manual box ?
![]() it made such a dramatic change my wife noticed immediately and was thrilled with the difference.

^^^^nice afternoon project I'd imagine that if it were a transmission issue it would be more of a whine than a hum... If the sound was intermittent I'd point to the Bypass Valve (hooter valve), which hums of "hoots" on acceleration. When the pully went in my NG it didn't make any noise. Haha, sorry for shooting down all the ideas.

you may have a leaky flexpipe as well. That will cause the car to be loud under load and downshifts.

thanks fellas. i'll check the pulleys, flex pipe and bypass valve. tranny must wait until better weather. ever have the bypass valve "hoot" on decel? i don't have any vibration or whining so I'm leaning towards the valve but will check all of the above.
