alternator failure

My drive to work was uneventful.
My ride home from work started with a long start crank, followed by a battery light. seemed odd restarted, started just fine no light.
Made it about half way home battery light, five minutes later abs light, tcs off light.

About 3/4 of the way home started to lose dash lights, hids & continuous losses along my travels
Obviously losing battery power.

Though it might be just a battery failure it was 5 years old, replaced it.
Still have a battery light.

My question is 1. Is there anything else that can mimic an alternator failure?
2. Can I replace the voltage regulator or would I be better off just replacing the entire alternator, remaned or rebuilt from eeuro?

Thanks

That's what I'm probably going to do.
I'm just trying to figure out why the sudden failure. Is that typical or I am just lucky
