Question 9-5 Vector Engine warning light - test what bit is faulty

I have a EU registered (first registration 2004) Saab Vector, 9.5 Turbo (petrol, 1985cc, 4 cylinder), automatic.

My red engine warning light is on most of the time. I disconnected the battery to reset it and it stays of for a while but comes on again. At other times it is just off and stays off by itself. Next it comes on again during a drive. Etc.

I went to my garage and they said it is a puzzle, as they have to replace bit after bit to see what bit is faulty. This of course could be very costly.

Is there a way (DIY or Garage) to test what bit is faulty if any?

Thanks.

Ask them what code(s) specifically are causing the check engine light. Then post it/them here and we can give guidance. Or, you can buy an inexpensive OBD2 reader and check yourself.
