Engine knocking in 1st

2001 Aero, 208k MT

Only occurs under hard acceleration. Pulled out into heavy traffic yesterday, 1st gear and romped it - engine bucked and knocked (TCS didn't come on) and the car barely accelerated. Thought that maybe since I had cut the wheel (it was a hard left into traffic) it could have related to the issue... but after test driving on clear, straight open roads later that evening the process repeated. But only in 1st gear under hard acceleration... 2nd was fine, as was 3rd. Spark related? DIC going bad? It has been running rich..

I would pull the plugs and look into each cylinder and see if one looks cleaner or different. NGK plugs are cheap if the plugs look bad.

How do the vacuum lines and intercooler hoses look?

Next I would get/borrow another DIC and see if things change. Do you have access to a Tech-II or is it throwing any codes?
